When the talk turns to vodka, Moscow, not Maui, probably comes to mind. But beginning this spring, Hawaii 's very own vodka distillery will begin offering tours and tastings. Ocean Vodka , about half an hour south of the Kahului airport, is building a new solar-powered plant that will produce what the company says is “the only vodka in the world distilled from organic sugar cane,” which grows on 80 acres of the slopes of Haleakala volcano. The water, which makes up more than half of the bottled product, comes from mineral-rich deposits 3,000 feet beneath the Big Island . (The water is desalinated and purified before being shipped to Maui.)

It has survived 19 coups, military rule, hurricanes and even a three-year embargo. But in the Jan. 12 earthquake, Haiti's best-known export and one of its oldest businesses, Rhum Barbancourt, suffered a $4-million setback. Amber bottles and white oak vats — some containing rum as old as 15 years — crashed to the distillery floor. It could take up to four years for production of one of the world's top rums to return to its pre-quake capacity, though the owner is hoping to resume bottling and shipping by early May. Travelers can now purchase the rum at the Port-au-Prince airport — though there's a three-bottle limit — after an almost three-month hiatus.

How about a California rum to celebrate National Rum Day? It turns out the Imperial Valley grows sugar cane and from that the folks at St. George Spirits in the San Francisco Bay Area produce an extraordinary St. George California Agricole Rum (formerly known as Agua Libre Rum) “A pure, primal, unapologetic expression of fresh California cane,” it's funky all right and captures your attention right away.  St. George California Agricole Rum is made from fresh sugar cane in the style of a Martinique rhum agricole or cachaça.

Shares of Pacific Ethanol Inc., which counts Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates among its shareholders, surged after the company was selected by the U.S. Energy Department to receive a $24.32-million grant to build a cellulosic ethanol refinery. The Sacramento company gained 64 cents, or 11.5%, to $6.21. The company will build a 2.7-million-gallon distillery in Boardman, Ore., where it already has a refinery. Cellulosic ethanol uses nonfood crops as a feedstock rather than corn.

That the first time is always fondly remembered is a truism of baseball writers and spring training. And so, without further ado, let it be recorded that on Feb. 14, 1947, the plane carrying the New York Yankees and a 21-year old sports writer left LaGuardia Airport for San Juan, P.R., and an adventure still bright in memory 38 years later. San Juan was only the first stop for the Yankees on this unusual spring training trip planned by Col. Larry MacPhail, part-owner of the club.

Just outside Frankfort stands the historic Labrot & Graham distillery, which dates to 1812. It wasn't the first Bourbon distillery, but it's the oldest working distillery in the country, thanks to the $7 million that Brown-Forman spent on restoring it in 1995-96. It's also the smallest distillery, turning out a meager 11 barrels a day, rather less than 1% as much as Jim Beam. Plant manager Dave Scheurich likes to jest, "We work very hard at being inefficient."

The air outside GreenBar Collective craft distillery in Monrovia is getting warm, but it still crackles with the crispness of fall. Inside the bright, white warehouse, two employees bottle fresh apple bitters while Keith Taylor, the bar manager for sprawling Echo Park restaurant Mohawk Bend, chats with GreenBar's founders and master distillers, Melkon Khosrovian and Litty Mathew. They stand beside a silver tank of ruby red hibiscus liqueur that Taylor uses to make a limoncello-based drink called the Arturo Bandini.
