Gay marriage proponents are riding into Wednesday's U.S. Supreme Court discussion about the Defense of Marriage Act on a wave of support from Proposition 8 debates a day earlier. The court Wednesday was hearing arguments on the legality of withholding tax and Social Security benefits from same-sex couples in states where gay marriages are legal. On Tuesday evening, gay marriage proponents and opponents of California's Proposition 8 rallied around the country.

A Burbank daycare owner and her employee pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges that an 11-month-old boy in their care died last year after allegedly suffocating from a car seat chest strap, officials said. Milena Nikodijevic, 51, owner of Twinkle Little Stars in Burbank, and her employee, Wendy Oropeza, 21, were charged with involuntary manslaughter and child abuse after the 11-month-old - identified by prosecutors only as Adam D. - died last year under their care, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

As Christopher Jones drove back to his office at the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center from a morning meeting, he tuned into National Public Radio. The communications manager didn't want to miss any updates on the Prop 8 arguments.  Back in the office, about 11 a.m., he sat down behind three computer screens. On one screen, he scrolled through his email to check for media requests and other updates, and on the other two screens he eyed the American Foundation for Equal Rights' website to check for morning updates about the arguments.

"Why don't you guys move home to the States?" my friends ask. "Because," I say, "although I am American, my partner is not, and because of DOMA, I can't sponsor him for a green card. " "But you're married. " TIMELINE: Gay marriage chronology "Technically, we're civil partnered, but immigration is a federal issue. It doesn't matter that individual states recognize my relationship with my husband or partner, or whatever I choose to call him. " "But that's unfair.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Backers of gay marriage expressed satisfaction with the arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday, saying they believed the justices supported their position. Jon Davidson, legal director of Lambda Legal, a gay rights advocacy group, said the hearing assured him that California gays are likely to be permitted to marry again. He said the most devastating admission for the proponents came when Charles Cooper, the lawyer defending Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriage in California, was asked whether there was any rational basis for treating gay people unequally in any setting, such as employment, other than in marriage.

The crowd cheered and clapped Tuesday morning as the LGBT pride flag was raised and flapped for the first time over City Hall Plaza in Long Beach. The ceremony -- which marked the U.S. Supreme Court hearing on California's Proposition 8 -- was part of the Courage Campaign's California Mayors United Against Proposition 8 movement. Mayors from at least 25 cities are participating in the movement, including Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.  FULL COVERAGE: Battle over gay marriage   A letter signed by the mayors was sent to the Supreme Court before it heard the two gay rights-related cases it is considering this week.

One leading law professor said he saw little support on the U.S. Supreme Court for keeping Proposition 8, California's ban on gay marriage. Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of the law school at UC Irvine and a constitutional law professor, said a reading of the transcript  showed that several justices were particularly concerned about standing, especially Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. If the court dismisses the appeal on standing, the ruling by a federal district judge would probably stand.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi got Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom-- the former San Francisco mayor whose actions launched the litigation -- a seat in the courtroom Tuesday. “I don't want to overstate it, but literally when I walked in, I had a feeling I had never had before. People talk about a rush of motions. You literally feel this rush through your body. It was very powerful.” He said the arguments were technical and legal but he came away with the sense that same-sex marriages would resume in June in California, and that the high court's ruling would be narrow.

SAN FRANCISCO - As the battle over gay marriage takes center stage at the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday, a new survey shows that attitudes on same-sex marriage have shifted rapidly. Polling data consistently show that knowing a gay person is a strong factor. A poll by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, released last week and conducted in mid-March, found that 14% of Americans say they have changed their minds about same-sex marriage. FULL COVERAGE: Same-sex marriage ban Roughly a third of them told pollsters it was because they know someone - a friend or family member or other acquaintance - who is gay. The poll also found that more Americans now say they support gay marriage than oppose it. Roughly 49% of Americans say they support gay marriage, with 44% opposed.

PARIS -- Croatian-born, Paris-based designer Damir Doma is really hitting his stride, as seen in his fall 2013 collection shown Wednesday at Paris Fashion Week. The look: Quietly rebellious. A daytime wardrobe with a subtle punk edge. Pleated trousers with zip-back tunics or bomber jackets, all in houndstooth boucle or pinstripe jacquards, made for a sporty spin on the suit. Shift dresses with zippered details, ruched collars and raglan sleeves were immensely wearable. And a fur biker jacket was just fun. Metallic leather Chelsea boots or creeper shoes with lug soles added some quirkiness.
