Domino's Pizza is using a new ad campaign to tell consumers "No," specifically so they'll stop trying to add or substitute ingredients on "Artisan Pizza" orders. The pizza company has four varieties of the artisan pie, which now include a new Chicken & Bacon Carbonara version. But want pepperoni on that? Or maybe anchovies? Not a chance. Domino's is so adamant about the policy that it's dedicating its new media blitz, which launches Thursday, to saying "No. " (Other fast food ads that focus on cheerful celebrities and lush images of food are "tiresome" in Domino's eyes.)

Restaurant sales may be recovering nicely in the U.S., but eateries are increasingly looking abroad, where diners are more accepting of innovations such as Pizza Hut's new cheeseburger-crusted pies in the Middle East. Think it's a joke? A fantasy food dreamed up by a teenage boy? Even the advertisement acknowledges how silly it all sounds. In the video, diners look on agog as a royal page brings in the monstrosity “masterpiece” - dubbed the “Crown Crust Pizza” - on a cushion.

In the food world, "artisan" used to mean a meticulously handcrafted product, made in small batches. No more. This week, Domino's Pizza introduced its Artisan Pizza line at its nearly 5,000 outlets across the country. It joined the trend of major companies in describing products as artisan. Wendy's has its Artisan Egg Sandwich, Ralphs markets offers Private Selection Artisan Breads and Starbucks sells Artisan Breakfast Sandwiches. The term, from the Italian artigiano, was coined as far back as the 16th century to refer to a skilled craftsman who carved or otherwise hand-tooled an item.

A paramedic testified Wednesday that a dying South Carolina pizza deliveryman, suffering gunshot wounds to his head, identified his assailant as Mitchell Carleton Sims, who last month was convicted of killing a Glendale pizzeria employee. The testimony before a Pasadena Superior Court jury came at the start of the penalty trial for Sims, 26, who was convicted in the 1985 torture-slaying of Domino's Pizza deliveryman John Steven Harrigan, 21.

I am writing to add my support for the argument presented by Fred Sheridan of Thousand Oaks in his Aug. 24 letter concerning Jill Lederer, owner of several Domino's Pizza shops. Mr. Sheridan made some very appropriate points and there is no need to repeat them here. However, there is one point that bothers me that has not been raised. If Ms. Lederer, an accomplished businessperson, is willing to invest more than $125,000 to reshape the City Council, I would expect that she must be looking for something in return from that City Council.

With a week to go until election day, this is no time for a candidate to let up or take anything for granted in the run for governor. In other words, if I were a billionaire who hadn't voted in decades, but I'd spent $141 million trying to buy your vote, I wouldn't put my wallet away with less than a week to go. I'd make it an even $150 million, or maybe more. Why leave any doubt that I gave it my best shot? It's Meg Whitman, of course, who dropped all those shekels, along with another $20 million from donors.

Domino's changing its pizza recipe Domino's Pizza Inc., the second-largest U.S. pizza chain, has overhauled its recipe after six straight quarters of declining revenue. The new formula features a garlic- and parsley-seasoned crust, a sweeter tomato sauce and a blend of mozzarella and provolone cheeses, the Ann Arbor, Mich., company said. Domino's is rolling out the new recipe nationwide today after a soft launch in some of the chain's 4,900 U.S. locations. Domino's is the No. 1 pizza delivery company in the U.S., according to consulting firm NPD. It wants to elevate the quality of its pizza to that of its delivery service, said Mark Smith, an analyst with Feltl & Co. The goal is to gain share from Yum Brands Inc.'s Pizza Hut, the biggest pizza chain, and Papa John's International Inc., which has been adding U.S. stores, he said.

Amazon.com Inc. shut like a book. Domino's Pizza Inc. was late but eventually delivered. And CNN focused on the good news. When the three major brands engaged with their Web-savvy fans and critics in separate incidents last week, their responses demonstrated how corporations are still learning how to control their messages -- and reputations -- in a fast-twitch online world.

The next time Domino's Pizza tells you a pie is on the way, they might be able to prove it. Pizza Tracker, available at 3,200 stores in the pizza chain, gives customers up-to-the-minute updates on the progress of their order, from the moment it is processed at the store to when the pie is boxed and sent out for delivery. The service is available to customers who order by phone or online. Domino's aims to offer the service in more than 90% of its 5,000 U.S. stores within a few months to compete with Papa John's and Pizza Hut for Internet-savvy customers who expect faster delivery.

I am a longtime resident, but I have never taken a public stand on a political issue or written a letter to the editor. I have restricted my volunteer hours to service clubs and military organizations. I would have maintained my silence if I were not so offended that Jill Lederer, who doesn't even live in our city, is leading and bankrolling a recall campaign against one of our local elected officials, Councilwoman Elois Zeanah. There is no malfeasance, so a recall is not justified.
