Marion Jones equaled the third-fastest time in the women's 100 meters with a clocking of 10.76 seconds, but she was overshadowed by world-record performances by Kenyan distance runners Daniel Komen and Paul Tergat at the Van Damme Memorial track and field meet Friday at Brussels. Komen shattered the 5,000-meter record, clocking 12 minutes 39.74 seconds and bettering Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie's record of 12:41.86 set 10 days ago. Tergat set a record in the 10,000 meters with a time of 26:27.

Former Raider and USC quarterback Todd Marinovich has been charged with felony marijuana cultivation and two drug-related misdemeanors. The misdemeanor charges, filed Tuesday, related to a syringe and prescription drugs not in Marinovich's name that were found by Orange County deputies who arrested him March 24 after he called 911 from his Dana Point home to report a friend was unconscious there. Paramedics found John Valdez, who was hospitalized and later recovered.

The slumping Hartford Whalers fired Coach Paul Holmgren on Monday and replaced him with Paul Maurice, a former coach of the Detroit Junior Red Wings. Holmgren had served as coach of the Whalers since 1992 with the exception of a sixth-month period between November 1993, and June 1994, when he served exclusively as the team's general manager. He was 54-93-14 as coach.

Flamboyant boxing promoter Don King was acquitted of insurance fraud Thursday in a New York court after 11 hours of jury deliberation. "This is so great. I'm so thrilled," King said. "The most important thing to me now is freedom." The federal jury also was unable to reach a verdict on charges against Don King Productions Inc., which were added to the case after a jury in 1995 failed to reach a verdict on the same nine wire-fraud charges against King. Former University of Massachusetts basketball star and Toronto Raptor forward Marcus Camby was arrested on a marijuana charge near his home at South Windsor, Conn., after police spotted his car drifting across a road. Police said they suspected a drunk driver when they pulled Camby over about 2 a.m., about 10 miles from where he went to high school in Hartford. Camby told police he had not been drinking, but the officer smelled burned marijuana in the car, said Sgt. Matthew D. Reed.
