Don't join a gang, an L.A. County sheriff's deputy was telling some elementary school kids in Paramount. You could wind up in jail -- a dark, ugly place where you're served bad food. At that point, related City Talk, Paramount's newsletter, a kid piped up: "Man, that's terrible. I don't want to go anywhere they serve vegetables."

Duncan Sillers, a retired fire and safety manager for Arco, has been elected president of the Carson Chamber of Commerce. Sillers, a resident of Carson for 30 years, is former president of the Carson High School Boosters' Club and has been a member of the chamber for 15 years. He replaces outgoing President J. Michael Leavitt. Newly elected directors of the chamber's board are Leon Bodnar, the Los Angeles County Fire Department; Clarance Braly, Southern California Edison Co.

Carson, which has no property tax, honored its 10 top generators of sales tax at a recent luncheon. Sales tax revenues accounted for $10.9 million--about half the general fund--during the fiscal year that ended June 30. Carson receives 1 cent of the 6 1/2 cents per dollar in collected sales tax. The 10 firms are: American Honda Motor Co., Bayless Stationers, Carson Chrysler-Plymouth, Carson Toyota, Cormier Chevrolet, Don Kott Ford, Sears, Shell Oil Co., Stockdale Materials Co. and Yamazen U.S.A.

A 46-year old Rowland Heights woman was arrested after she led deputies on a 27-minute freeway chase Friday and then tried to run one down, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said. Employees at Don Kott Ford in Carson called police to report that a woman had been urinating and screaming profanities in the parking lot for an hour, Sheriff's Lt. Rick McKeon said. When a deputy approached her at the dealership at 5:30 p.m., Josephine Reyes tried to hit him with her car, McKeon said.

Carson officials have decided to direct $750,000 from the city's general fund into a car dealership expansion project. Using the provisions of California redevelopment law to help support the expansion plan, the Carson Redevelopment Agency agreed to loan $750,000 plus interest for 10 years to Don Kott Ford and Alpha Omega Development Corp. The Redevelopment Agency is composed of City Council members.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District has responsibility to control air pollution in the area. It has the power to seek court-imposed fines against polluters of from $25 to $25,000 a day based on such factors as the extent that emissions exceed legal limits, the potential danger to the public, whether the violation was intentional, accidental or due to negligence and the company's history of violations.
