Syracuse University quarterback Don McPherson, the Heisman Trophy runner-up, was a 15-year-old freshman the day his father first saw him practicing with a high school team. A New York city police detective at the time, Gene McPherson, formerly a boxer, said Wednesday that he went to that first scrimmage with one of his two older sons, Mark. Like father, like son: Mark is a middleweight boxer, and Miles, the eldest son, played cornerback for several years for the San Diego Chargers.

The Chicago Bears were stalled. They were losing to the Washington Redskins, 35-21, and the Bear fans were hooting. With the ball on their 35-yard line and time running out, the Bear coach searched out the rookie quarterback. "You ready?" he asked Willie Thrower. "Am I what ?" answered Thrower. Out came starter George Blanda. In went the kid. The football felt like a tennis ball. The arm felt like George Blanda's leg.

Heisman Trophy winner Tim Brown and All-American quarterback Don McPherson are big-crowd draws here, and a sellout appears likely for this weekend's Japan Bowl, an annual college all-star game, to be played at Yokohama. "Ticket sales are at a faster pace than last year, and we expect they will be sold out before Sunday," an official of the game's organizing committee said Friday. The game will be played at the 30,000-seat Yokohama Stadium with a kickoff time of 7 p.m.
