Nature hikes and art exhibits will be part of a celebration at Laguna Coast Wilderness Park June 16 and 17. For the first time, guides will lead visitors through the area, including a six-mile hike at 8:30 a.m. from Little Sycamore Canyon to Laurel Canyon, said Mary Fegraus, Laguna Canyon Foundation executive director. As part of a broad plan to give $25 million over several years to improve schools serving Irvine Ranch communities, Irvine Co. and the Donald Bren Foundation on Wednesday announced the first distribution of funds. For the 2001-02 school year, about $2.8 million will go to 52 schools as cash awards of $15,000 each to teachers and principals for outstanding work, and to two other education programs. The Irvine Public Schools Foundation contributed $750,000 to local schools Tuesday--making the first installment on a pledge to give $2.25 million to the Irvine Unified School District by the end of the academic year. Foundation President Jerry Amante and Executive Director Greg Bradbard presented the funds at the school board meeting, where officials praised the efforts of the local fund-raising organization.

Teachers in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District will get a $100,000 boost tonight when they are honored at the district's third annual Grants to Teachers Awards Banquet. One hundred teachers and projects at 27 district schools will receive money, aimed at augmenting classroom studies. Out of the $100,000 total, the Irvine Co. and the Donald Bren Foundation are donating $67,500 in grants--$2,500 each for 27 teachers.

The UC Irvine School of the Arts has been renamed the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, university officials announced this week. The change honors the late Oscar- and Emmy-winning actress, whose family foundation has donated $5 million to the arts school. The Donald Bren Family Foundation donated another $2.5 million toward the school's goal of $10 million. Trevor was the stepmother of Donald Bren, chairman of the Irvine Co.

The UC Irvine School of the Arts has been renamed the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, university officials announced Thursday. The change honors the Academy Award- and Emmy Award-winning actress who, together with the Bren family, has donated $7.5 million to the arts school. (Donald Bren, chairman of the Irvine Company, is Trevor's stepson.) Another $2.5 million toward the goal of $10 million will be sought for the arts school's on-going capital campaign.

Orange County's major developer announced Wednesday the availability of $20 million to preserve, restore and enhance access to more than 30,000 acres of land already donated or earmarked for donation as open public space. Under the plan by the Irvine Co. and the Donald Bren Foundation--a separate nonprofit foundation formed by the company's chairman--half the money will be dedicated to 14,000 acres the company has already to public agencies, mostly in connection with existing developments.

The Donald Bren Foundation of Newport Beach has awarded the California Institute of Technology $10 million to establish named professorships in biology and related disciplines. The grant was part of Caltech's Biological Sciences Initiative, which aims to provide resources and researchers to explore the biological sciences. More than $80 million has been raised during the three-year fund-raising effort, which was announced in May 1998.
