Donnie Rae, a Ventura County native with an impressive coaching background in the college and high school ranks, was hired Monday as football coach at Channel Islands High. Rae was head coach at Fresno Roosevelt High the last six years. In addition, he has been an assistant at USC, San Diego State, Nevada Las Vegas, San Jose State and Brigham Young. "I think we got ourselves an outstanding choice," said Mike Martinez, principal at Channel Islands.

Bushwhacking saved the day for Camarillo at Moorpark College on Saturday, propelling the team into today's final round of the Area 6 American Legion playoffs. Just when it appeared Westlake would cut into Camarillo's two-run lead in the eighth inning, Scott Bush took the mound and surprised Westlake with an ambush of strikes to secure Camarillo's 8-6 victory.

A pitcher starting two games on the same day is about as common as a runner stealing home twice in the same inning. But last Saturday, at the American Legion Area 6 playoffs at Moorpark College, that rarity became reality--and the strategy almost worked for Westlake. Westlake, the District 16 winner, had reached the third round of the six-team, double-elimination tournament Saturday with a 1-1 record.

When Houston Grand Opera asked Jack O'Brien who should direct its 1976 bicentennial production of Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess," he told them to hire a black woman. "I thought it should reflect a woman's sensibility toward the black woman's dilemma in the '20s," explained O'Brien. "I suggested they hire Vanette Carol, a woman with whom I had worked in my early days in New York."
