A man shot and killed by a police officer in the 3000 block of Loosmore Street on Friday was identified as Carlos Edwin Arevalo, 25. According to Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman Norma Eisenman, the shooting occurred about 6:25 p.m., when two officers in an "all-purpose vehicle" saw two people on the street and stopped to talk to them. The pair took off running. "There was some sort of pursuit, and an officer was involved in the shooting," she said. Eisenman said that a handgun was recovered at the scene and that the officers were in uniform, an assertion disputed by several neighbors.

A 31-year-old man was killed Tuesday in a drive-by shooting as he stood holding a machete in front of a pay telephone in Montecito Heights, authorities said. The man was acting strange shortly before the 4:40 p.m. shooting, repeating in Spanish, "I'm looking for death" and pacing in front of a phone in the 3600 block of Pasadena Avenue, police said. The man had beaten the receiver against the console until it broke. Los Angeles police later recovered a second machete from behind the phone.

Officials say two teenagers are in custody in connection with the jailbreak of a 17-year-old murder suspect from a juvenile detention center. The San Mateo County sheriff said Martin Villa Patino and Vanher Cho, both 18, helped push Josue Raul Orozco over a 10-foot concrete security wall Thursday night. Orozco escaped through the hole cut in a chain-link fence that surrounds the exercise area. Orozco was being tried as an adult for murder in connection with a drive-by shooting in Redwood City.

A motorist was in stable condition after being cut off early Saturday near LAX and followed to South Los Angeles, where he was shot, police said. About 2:15 a.m., a 19-year-old man from Inglewood was driving near Los Angeles International Airport when an unidentified man and woman in a Volvo cut in front of his vehicle. They followed him to Hyde Park, between West Boulevard and Brynhurst Avenue, where several rounds were fired from their vehicle, said Los Angeles Police Officer Karen Smith.

Three Iraqi journalists and their driver were killed Wednesday in a drive-by shooting near the northern city of Kirkuk. Attackers opened fire with machine guns as they drove past the journalists' vehicle, Police Brig. Gen. Sarhat Qadir said. The four worked for the independent Raad media company, which publishes several generally pro-government weekly newspapers and monthly magazines that deal with politics, education and the arts.

Two teenage boys were wounded Tuesday outside a Van Nuys high school in what police said was a suspected gang-related shooting. As school let out about 3:15 p.m., a 16-year-old Grant High School student and a 17-year-old former student were walking across a bridge on adjacent Oxnard Street when the occupants of a pickup possibly asked them a gang-related question, said Capt. An unidentified male juvenile was killed in a drive-by shooting Sunday afternoon, authorities said. The victim was seated in an automobile outside a liquor store at 108th Street and Western Avenue shortly before 2 p.m. when a car carrying four men drove up. Someone in the car opened fire, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. Eric Toussant said. The victim was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Two pedestrians were killed in an apparent drive-by shooting early Sunday in an unincorporated county area near Santa Fe Springs, authorities said. The victims, a male and female, were pronounced dead at a local hospital after the shooting, which occurred about 12:20 a.m. in the 12200 block of Painter Avenue near Imperial Highway. Their names were not released. Authorities said they do not have a description of the shooter or the vehicle, and that the motive was unknown.

Police on Friday arrested a second man suspected in connection with an Aug. 2 drive-by shooting in an alley in the 1300 block of west Baker Street that left one man dead and four others wounded. Anthony Nicholas Dispensa, 21, was arrested on suspicion of homicide about 6:40 a.m. in the parking lot of the Franklin Motel in the 6900 block of Beach Boulevard in Buena Park, where he was renting a room, authorities said.
