Khang Quang Le was a free spirit. His family said his motto was, "Live for today; tomorrow may never come." On Tuesday afternoon, his family gathered at his sister's apartment in Santa Ana to comfort each other and to talk about the 23-year-old man who lived adventurously, they said, and who paid for that adventure with his life. An avid surfer, the former Dana Hills High School graduate left Orange County for Hawaii two years ago to be closer to its famous surf, his family said.

Heidi Klum saved her son and two nannies from drowning in a riptide over the weekend. Add "lifeguard" to the 39-year-old's long list of jobs, which includes supermodel, "Project Runway" host and now "America's Got Talent" judge. While the family was vacationing on Oahu, Hawaii, over the weekend, the German supermodel's son Henry, 7, and two nannies were swept away by a riptide, according to Us Weekly. But Klum and bodyguard-boyfriend Martin Kristen spotted their distress and helped save them from drowning.

Randy California, lead guitarist of the innovative rock group Spirit, is missing after swimming off the Hawaiian island of Molokai and is presumed dead, family and friends said Wednesday. Last Thursday, California, 46, of Ojai, went for a swim with his 12-year-old son, Quinn, and was caught in a riptide, said Debbie Pollard, his personal assistant. After searching for two days, authorities called off the rescue operation. California was in Molokai to visit his mother, who lives on the island.

A Corona del Mar man drowned after he fell into a stream and was swept over a waterfall, Hawaii County police said Saturday. The victim, identified as Paul Gregory Feit, 23, was pronounced dead after falling into the Wailuku River in Hilo on Friday, police said. A witness told police that Feit and two of his friends had been swimming in the river on the east side of the island of Hawaii, about 200 miles from Honolulu, before the 1:35 p.m. accident.

An environmental activist drowned in Keauhou Bay shortly after he led boaters and surfboarders in a demonstration against a geothermal project, authorities said. Dexter Cate, 47, was diving from a kayak Tuesday when he failed to surface, police Lt. Errol Ishimine said. His body was recovered from 80 feet of water and his death was classified as an accident, Ishimine said. Cate had led the flotilla to protest a state-backed plan to build geothermal power plants in the Wao Kele O Puna rain forest.
