Police found two bodies in a lake they believe to be friends who drowned while trying to canoe the length of the Mississippi River. Authorities found the bodies and their overturned canoe in Lake Winnibigoshish on Saturday, the Cass County sheriff's office said. They are believed to be Jonathan C. Hoare, 26, of St. Louis, and Mark E. Huckabay, 37, of San Francisco, who have been missing since May 9.

Pelting rain continued to swell the upper reaches of the Mississippi River into a debris-choked torrent Wednesday, and with more storms predicted for the rest of the week, emergency officials braced for the possibility of evacuating some low-lying communities. At least two people were reported drowned Wednesday along surging tributaries in Minnesota. Authorities reported that an 11-year-old girl drowned while wading in floodwaters near LeCenter, Minn. The body of a 4-year-old St. Paul, Minn.
