Earnest Killum, a Southland high school basketball star who was playing with Oregon State University, died Monday, three days after suffering his second stroke in six months. Killum suffered a massive stroke Friday shortly after concluding an interview in which he talked about a mild stroke he suffered in July. He was cleared on Dec. 27 to join the basketball team.

Dave Kragthorpe will be fired from his job as head coach of the Oregon State football team, a Portland television station reported. KOIN-TV, citing unnamed sources close to the university administration, said the firing would be announced today after school Athletic Director Dutch Baughman meets with Kragthorpe. Baughman refused to comment. Oregon State went 1-10 this year. Kragthorpe, 57, has a 17-48-2 record at Oregon State.

Dutch Baughman, former head of the athletic departments at Furman and Virginia Tech, was named athletic director at Oregon State today. Baughman, 41, succeeds Lynn Snyder, whose contract was not renewed. Baughman had been senior associate athletic director at Oregon State since October. He is also former associate commissioner of the Southwest Athletic Conference. Baughman said one of his biggest jobs will be dealing with the athletic department's $2.5-million deficit.

Northern Illinois football Coach Jerry Pettibone is scheduled to tour Oregon State today to decide whether he wants to become the school's next head football coach. Gerald O'Dell, Northern Illinois athletic director, said he told the school's football team that Pettibone has been offered the job but Oregon State Athletic Director Dutch Baughman said only that he would be happy to recommend Pettibone for the job.

Dutch Baughman, Oregon State's athletic director, has already talked with UCLA defensive coordinator Rocky Long about becoming the Beavers' football coach. Long and USC's Mike Riley, along with Oregon State offensive coordinator Denny Schuler, have been mentioned prominently in the search to replace Jerry Pettibone, who resigned under fire Tuesday with two years remaining on his contract. Oregon State went 2-9 this season.

The early signing rule, which now applies only to high school basketball, is under consideration for use in football and baseball, according to a spokesman for the Collegiate Commissioner's Assn. "We're exploring it," said Dutch Baughman, assistant to Fred Jacoby, chairman of the association. The early signing rule allows high school basketball players to sign national letters of intent during a one-week period in November, before their senior season has begun.
