Dwyane Wade, the Heat superstar who is trying to help Miami win a second consecutive NBA championship this spring, surprised a Miami teenager when he showed up unexpectedly at her senior prom on Friday night. Nicole Muxo made a YouTube video last month inviting Wade to be her date at the Archbishop Coleman Carroll High prom. She got no reply, though. Then Wade showed up at the La Jolla Ballroom in Coral Gables, Fla., on Friday night with roses in hand, much to the surprise of Muxo and her classmates.

There's suddenly a common bond that has developed between Kobe Bryant and LeBron James: Both players disappeared in the fourth quarter of their respective Game 2 losses. Yet there's an obvious difference between the two. After missing his last five shots in the game, Bryant looked visibly upset that Metta World Peace ignored him and passed to an open Steve Blake, whose missed three-pointer allowed the Thunder to escape with a 77-75 Game 2 victory. A day after missing a pair of free throws in the final minutes of Miami's Game 2 loss to Indiana, James defended both World Peace's inbounds play and Blake shooting the open trey.

The miracles expired in the final minutes of Wednesday's game, the Miami Heat's collection of All-Stars finally outweighing the Lakers and their one healthy point guard. It wasn't really unexpected, the Heat that much better than the Lakers, and it underlined so many things about the home team on another Christmas Day loss, this one 101-95 at Staples Center. Nick Young's all-or-nothing act is often a joy to watch and the Lakers can hang with good teams if they make a slew of three-pointers, but, of greatest importance, there is still no closer on this team.

When it was over, when the Lakers' heave-three-pointers-and-hope strategy failed Wednesday and the Miami Heat showed the heart of a champion and the hunger to win again, Kobe Bryant embraced LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, exchanging kind words and pats on the back in the true Christmas spirit. The problem for the Lakers was that Bryant was in street clothes, a black jacket and pants and sparkly black sneakers. James and Wade were in uniform and in a state of contentment after their 101-95 victory over the Lakers.
