Update -- The Galaxy defeated the Dynamo, 3-1, on Wednesday night in the semifinals of the U.S. Open Cup, and Houston Coach Dominic Kinnear was unhappy with his team's performance. "The quicker we forget about this, the better we are," he said. Kinnear blamed the loss on "lack of execution" by the offense and "absolute mental breakdowns" by the defense.

Three weeks ago, after a 3-1 home loss to the Houston Dynamo, the Galaxy players trudged off the field in Carson with heads bowed and a 4-13-5 Major League Soccer record. They were headed nowhere. Today, after a 2-1 win over that same Houston team in Texas on Sunday -- on goals by Carlos Pavon and Gavin Glinton -- the Galaxy is 8-13-6 and three wins from clinching an improbable spot in the MLS playoffs. The Galaxy has won four in a row and is unbeaten in five.

To Michelle Schumacher, success is a four-letter word spelled C-A-T-S. "Somebody is watching over me," the jubilant San Diego native said by phone from New York after signing a contract to do "Cats" on Broadway. "Now I have a job I love, and I can do it as long as I want," said Schumacher, who, ironically, is allergic to real cats. "The show has been on Broadway for seven years, and they don't foresee it closing." The 23-year-old made her Broadway debut last Tuesday as the cat Sillabub.

Several days after the fact, George Soros' speech describing the euro crisis as a bubble still has economic eggheads in a tizzy of admiration. The address -- delivered by the financier in Trento, Italy, over the weekend -- has been praised as an " absolute dynamo" by Business Insider's Joe Weisenthal. Felix Salmon at Reuters said " it's really good . " Twitter users have referred to the talk as "quietly terrifying," "extraordinary" and "probably the most important thing you're going to read all month.

Winston Lord, the American ambassador to China, is fond of telling how he was greeted by a Chinese in one of this country's most remote provinces. "I know who you are," the man said. "You're the husband of Bao Boyi, aren't you?" He is, indeed, and proud enough of the fact not to mind sometimes being overshadowed by the celebrity of his wife in this, the land of her birth. Bao Boyi, as she is known in Chinese, is Bette Bao Lord--novelist, hostess, diplomatic dynamo.

The MLS Cup at the Home Depot Center on Sunday has a number of compelling story lines, including a straight one that starts with Houston Coach Dominic Kinnear, passes though his captain, Brian Ching, then ends with Galaxy teammates Landon Donovan and Todd Dunivant. That quartet won an MLS Cup together eight years ago in San Jose, after which Donovan and Dunivant headed off to Los Angeles and the entire San Jose franchise later moved to Houston. The foundation for this year's championship game might have been poured back then.

In the lead-up to its game Saturday night, Chivas USA made much of the fact that its players would be wearing camouflage jerseys in honor of the U.S. armed forces. The jerseys obviously worked because the team's defense was invisible. The back line gave up two goals in the first 7 minutes 2 seconds en route to a 2-0 loss to the Houston Dynamo that ended a three-game unbeaten run and kept Chivas in third place in Major League Soccer's Western Conference. "I don't want to blame it on the two games this week, but I felt that we came out flat," Chivas USA Coach Martin Vasquez said.

It's not much in the way of bulletin board material, but it's all that the Houston Dynamo has provided. "I don't think they have players who can sit and defend a lead," Dynamo forward Paul Dalglish said last week. "They're an attacking team." "They" are the players of Chivas USA, who need only a tie today against Houston to advance to Major League Soccer's Western Conference final.

Owner Bruce McNall was behind the Kings' bench for the game against the Soviet team Saturday night, wearing a sweater proclaiming him, "Coach." Of course, when they presented him with the chance to coach the team in this exhibition game, they expected it to be a pleasant experience. The Kings were supposed to beat Dynamo Riga. The big surprise was that Dynamo Riga defeated the Kings, 5-3, before a crowd of 11,490 at the Forum.

Today's World Cup final is likely to boil down to this: Can West Germany stop Diego Maradona? The English tried and failed. The Belgians tried and failed. Maradona scored two goals against each in leading Argentina into the finals. In each game, one of his goals was so spectacular that Maradona, who wears No. 10, is being compared with the greatest No. 10 of all--Pele. Maradona does not want to be compared with Pele. "Maradona is Maradona," he said.
