I can't walk past the canned goods section of my supermarket without remembering the Korean War. The neatly stacked cans of corned beef hash transport me to my native Korean peninsula, where I lived through the first months of the war as a 7-year-old. Corned beef hash was more precious than gold. Whenever my resourceful grandmother managed to acquire a big can of it on the black market, she invited everyone around us to share a "special American" meal.
