Cynthia Barboza of Long Beach Wilson was presented with the Gatorade national girls' volleyball player of the year award in a ceremony Thursday at Wilson that included surprise appearances by former award winners Kerri Walsh and Ogonna Nnamani. Barboza won for the second year in a row, making her the first volleyball player to win the award more than once. She joins Marion Jones, LeBron James and Candace Parker as the only athletes in any sport to win it in consecutive seasons.

Any way you look at it, Madden is big. There is the person, John Madden, who is large in both build and stature. On Saturday, he will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, for his accomplishments as coach of the Oakland Raiders from 1969 to '79. On Sunday, he makes his NBC debut on the Hall of Fame exhibition game, becoming the first person to be the lead pro football commentator at four networks, having previously worked at ABC, Fox and CBS.

Consumers, daunted by the recession, hit the pause button on buying video games in May. The game industry last month racked up $863.3 million in sales of games and consoles, the first time since August 2007 that monthly sales came in less than $1 billion, according to a report released Thursday from market research firm NPD Group Inc. Sales of game consoles took a big hit last month, dropping 30% to $302.5 million from $433 million in May 2008.
