Happy Anniversary. On this, the 40th year of Reseda High's existence, the football team is going after a celebration of its own: a City Section 3-A Division championship. The Regents play Eagle Rock tonight at 7:30 at Birmingham High for the 3-A bragging rights. A victory would be a nice addendum to the Regents' anniversary year. "There's been some good timing this season," Reseda Coach Joel Schaeffer said.

The physical strength is obvious, evident in Rhuben Williams' rippling physique and the distances he throws the shotput. Then there is the inner strength. The difference in grade-point average between the valedictorian and the runner-up salutatorian at Eagle Rock High School this year was small but significant - a full five hundredths of a point, the difference between a 4.5 and a 4.55. Yet the parents of the second-ranked student are outraged, writing to top officials and threatening (what else?) a lawsuit. The mother of Stanford-bound Elisha Marquez complains that her daughter's "sleepless nights" of study were "for nothing," and her father characterizes her second-place finish this way: "You don't want your kid to be a loser.

Olivia Leal of Nightingale Junior High School in Los Angeles and Erick Vega of Eagle Rock High School were among winners in the Cinco de Mayo essay contest sponsored by USC. Olivia competed in the Spanish category grades 7-9 and Erick in Spanish grades 10-12. They each received a $500 scholarship.

Four students from Eagle Rock High School will compete Saturday for a chance to represent the Los Angeles area in the Third Annual Science Bowl in Washington during April. The Eagle Rock team, coached by Nel Graham, will answer questions in an elimination tournament with 15 other area senior high schools. The winning team will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the nation's capital for the April competition.

Several junior high students from northeast Los Angeles schools are participating in the Occidental Partnership to Increase Mathematics Opportunity program at the college. The monthlong summer program allows students to work with mathematics and learn about careers in mathematics, science and engineering.

Rosemarie Atienza, a junior at Eagle Rock High School, won first place in the 30th Congressional District art competition for high school students, an annual competition sponsored by the Congressional Arts Caucus. Atienza's black-ink pen sketch depicting a domestic violence scene will be on display in the U.S. Capitol for one year beginning this month along with student art from congressional districts nationwide.

An Eagle Rock High School senior, who wants to be both a physicist and the next Vanna White, placed third in the California Citizen Bee competition. Maureen Wan will travel to Washington June 22 to 26 with the first- and second-place winners from Southern California to compete in the National Citizen Bee Competition. Two winners from Northern California will also compete.

Marshall High School teacher David Tokofsky was declared the winner Monday of a close Los Angeles Unified school board race, beating his opponent by 72 votes. The results of the Eastside-San Fernando Valley race certified by Los Angeles City Clerk Elias Martinez showed Tokofsky with 11,390 votes and Eagle Rock High School parent liaison Lucia Rivera with 11,318.
