The U.S. Geological Survey said Monday that the chances of another magnitude 5 earthquake in the next seven days southeast of Mammoth Lakes is 10% to 20%. The scientists said there have been more than 1,000 aftershocks since a 5.6 quake hit that region Saturday. Twenty-six of these had magnitudes 3.0 or greater and five had magnitudes 4.0 or greater. However, through Monday afternoon, aftershock activity was tapering off.
