The year's largest earthquake, with a magnitude of about 7.8 on the Richter scale, occurred in the South Pacific, the U.S. Geological Survey announced Friday. Donovan Kelly, a U.S. Geological Survey spokesman, said the earthquake occurred at 6:48 a.m. today local time (1:48 p.m. Friday PDT). It was centered in the New Britain island region about 280 miles northeast of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, he said.
