A powerful earthquake shook a sparsely populated mountain region of southern China near the Burmese border, officials in Beijing said, but no casualties were reported. The temblor was centered in Yunnan province and measured 7.6 on the Richter scale. The U.S. Geological Survey measured it at 7.4. The remote area, site of a major fault, regularly experiences tremors measuring around 7.0 on the Richter scale.
