In a very competitive Sunset League, Huntington Beach Edison (11-3, 3-0) might be considered an early season surprise under first-year Coach Cameron Chinn. But don't tell that to pitcher Noah Kronfly, who improved to 4-0 on Friday and outdueled UCLA-bound Jacob Nix in a 1-0 victory over Los Alamitos. Phillip Knapp drove in the game's only run with a second-inning RBI single. Kronfly allowed two hits. Fountain Valley defeated Newport Harbor, 10-0. Dylan Persinger hit a two-run home run. Brock Lundquist hit his fourth home run of the season.

There was no denying the historic moment taking place in the tiny gym at Verdugo Hills High. Not since 1959, when Dwight Eisenhower was president, had the Dons' basketball team won a league championship. So some 300 people jammed into the gym Friday night and didn't leave disappointed, with the Dons defeating Van Nuys, 65-50, to finish with an 11-1 East Valley League record and win the league title outright. "It's the biggest win of my high school life, my career, everything," said senior guard Aragad Abramian, who finished with 19 points.

To win the East Valley League championship outright, Verdugo Hills (23-4 10-0) needs a victory either Wednesday at home against Grant (7-3) or Friday at home against Sun Valley Poly (9-2). More importantly, the Dons are hoping to be the No. 2 seed behind Sylmar when the City Section Division II playoff pairings are announced on Saturday. Coach Jared Gibson has put together a team that plays hard, passes the ball well and defends. Point guard Albert Marmol is averaging 12.2 points.

When Jeff Engilman retired as football coach at Arleta after the 2010 season, he believed he left the program in the capable hands of assistant Dan Kelly, who he had trained at Sylmar and Arleta. Kelly and his group of strong assistants have kept the program going strong. After seasons of 9-2 and 8-3 while playing in City Section Division I, the Mustangs opened their season last week with a 35-21 victory over El Camino Real. Sophomore running back Isaiah Gable rushed for 127 yards in just six carries.

As expected, Harbor City Narbonne was made the top-seeded team for the Los Angeles City Section Division I football playoffs by a selection committee Saturday morning. The Gauchos (10-0) wrapped up the Marine League title with a 53-7 rout of Gardena and will host No. 16 Los Angeles Locke in the first round Friday. If seedings hold, they will face No. 4 Carson in the semifinals in a rematch of Narbonne's 26-20 win Oct. 5. "Winning league is nice, but any coach or player would gladly trade that for a ring," Narbonne Coach Manuel Douglas said.
