BACK OF THE YEAR De'Jon Coleman Arleta De'Jon Coleman of Arleta turned in the most productive season by a running back in City Section history, scoring a record 47 touchdowns. He has been selected The Times' back of the year. "When you think of how many have played in the Los Angeles district for 100 years, to break that record is unbelievable," Coach Dan Kelley said. "He's just a great football player. " The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Coleman used acceleration and elusiveness to score most of his touchdowns.

There were no surprises at the City Section boys' basketball playoffs seeding meeting on Saturday. Woodland Hills Taft was awarded the top seeding in Division I after capturing the West Valley League title and finishing the regular season on a 13-game winning streak. The Toreadors (23-2) will host No. 16 Hollywood (11-5), the Central League champion, in the first round Thursday night. If seedings hold, Taft would face No. 8 Cleveland in the quarterfinals ? a team Taft beat by 37 and 39 points in league play.

A massive 36-inch pizza with 50 slices was being devoured in the boys' P.E. office at Verdugo Hills High in celebration of the basketball team's winning its first league championship since 1959, and the boyish-looking coach, Jared Gibson, could only smile at the irony of the moment. Gibson would never have been given this coaching job three years ago, and become the architect of an improbable turnaround, if an opportunity to run his own pizza parlor had not fallen through. Winning the championship "means everything to me," he said.

There was no denying the historic moment taking place in the tiny gym at Verdugo Hills High. Not since 1959, when Dwight Eisenhower was president, had the Dons' basketball team won a league championship. So some 300 people jammed into the gym Friday night and didn't leave disappointed, with the Dons defeating Van Nuys, 65-50, to finish with an 11-1 East Valley League record and win the league title outright. "It's the biggest win of my high school life, my career, everything," said senior guard Aragad Abramian, who finished with 19 points.

What you get with Jeff Engilman coaching high school football is what you see: a man whose face turns purple whenever a player makes a mistake. "I'm a perfectionist, and they're never perfect, are they?" he laments. "It drives me nuts. " He won two City Section 3-A championships coaching at Manual Arts in the 1980s, won two City 4-A championships coaching at Sylmar in the 1990s and now he has his second-year varsity program at Arleta off to a 3-0 start. At 57, he hasn't changed much.
