CHICAGO When: 7:30 p.m. PDT. Where: Staples Center. On the air: TV: TWC, TWC Deportes. Records: Sparks 16-7, Sky 15-7. Record vs. Sky: 0-1. Update: The Sparks return home after winning four of five on a nine-day trip, to face Eastern Division-leading Chicago. It will mark the first Los Angeles appearance of the Sky's Elena Delle Donne, one of the league's marquee rookies, who scored 20 points in a 92-84 victory over the Sparks on June 29 in Rosemont, Ill. Delle Donne, a 6-foot-5 swing player out of Delaware, leads all WNBA rookies with an 18.7 scoring average.

Joe Cascione singled to score Dave Garcia in the bottom of the eighth inning Wednesday at Poly High as Panorama City rallied to defeat Sun Valley, 6-5, and clinch the District 20 Eastern Division title. Panorama City (16-4), which trailed, 4-0, after 4 1/2 innings, rallied for two runs in the fifth inning and three runs in the sixth to forge a 5-5 tie. In the eighth, Roland De La Maza hit a leadoff double and Garcia was walked intentionally.

The Sockers (13-15) clubbed the Baltimore Blast, 4-1, Wednesday night at the San Diego Sports Arena before 5,985, a season low. So today they take to the road with a few more answers, fewer questions, a two-game winning streak and caution in their minds. "We're what, 13 and 15?" midfielder Brian Quinn said. "We should be 17 and 11.

Pacific and New Mexico State are the Big West Conference men's basketball coaches' preseason favorites to win their divisions. Pacific, which returns four starters, got seven first-place votes to finish first in the Western Division. Long Beach State, the defending conference champion, received five votes. In the Eastern Division, New Mexico State got seven first-place votes to Utah State's five. The conference is divided into divisions beginning this season.

A $2.1-million contract was awarded Monday by the City Council for construction of an eastern division police substation at Aero Drive and Ruffin Road. The contract was awarded to Douglas E. Barnhart Inc. Construction is expected to begin this year.

In other Big West games: North Texas 81, Cal State Fullerton 75--The Eagles won their third consecutive game and fourth in five games against Western Division teams in front of 1,107 at Titan Gym. North Texas (9-11, 4-6) is 0-5 against teams in the Eastern Division, but has lost only to Pacific in the Western Division. The Eagles had five players score in double figures to help overcome a season-high 26 points by guard Chris Dade of Fullerton (10-10, 3-7).

Santa Maria Righetti's wrestling team may have been the best-kept secret in the Southern Section this year, but the cat's out of the bag now. Righetti, runner-up to Moreno Valley Canyon Springs in the Southern Section Division III dual meet championships, had a meet-high four weight class winners at the Eastern Division championships Saturday night and finished in third place behind Covina Northview and Santa Ana. "A couple of teams knew about us," Righetti Coach Dutch Van Patten said.

Through five innings of Wednesday's battle for first place in the American Legion District 20's Eastern Division standings, all was quiet at Notre Dame High. Van Nuys-Notre Dame pitcher Rich Igou was twirling a one-hit shutout. His Verdugo Hills counterpart, John Workman, had strung together five goose eggs of his own. Peace reigned. Serenity was the order of the day. But in the final two innings, Verdugo Hills banged out plenty of hits en route to a 5-1 victory.

New Lazer Coach Keith Tozer and his struggling Major Indoor Soccer League club begin the first of three road games tonight at 5 p.m. against the Cleveland Force at Richfield, Ohio. The Lazers (6-19) have lost nine straight games, including a 6-5 overtime loss to the New York Express Saturday, which spoiled Tozer's MISL coaching debut. Cleveland (19-8) is in first place in the Eastern Division. The Lazers are in last in the West, 11 1/2 games behind the first-place Tacoma Stars.
