Los Angeles County prosecutors said Tuesday that they will consider whether to file a lewd conduct charge against the superintendent of the Eastside Union School District in the Antelope Valley following his arrest in a Lancaster park restroom last week. Robert W. Wakeling, 51, of Lancaster was arrested last Wednesday afternoon after a sheriff's vice deputy observed him allegedly masturbating in the men's restroom.

Elaine Macdonald, a homeowner activist and head of a private Antelope Valley trails group, has been appointed to fill a vacancy on the Lancaster Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission. The City Council this week ratified Macdonald, 46, as Mayor George Root's representative on the five-member advisory panel. She is the president of the Antelope Valley Trails, Recreation and Environmental Council and an officer in the Lancaster Coalition of Neighborhood Organizations.

Los Angeles County prosecutors on Friday filed a misdemeanor lewd conduct charge against the superintendent of the Lancaster-based Eastside Union School District, who was arrested Aug. 28 for allegedly masturbating in a park restroom. Robert W. Wakeling, 51, of Lancaster, the district's top executive since 1988, is scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 23 in Antelope Municipal Court. He faces a maximum penalty of six months in County Jail and a $1,000 fine if convicted.

The superintendent of the Eastside Union School District, arrested Aug. 28 for allegedly masturbating in a Lancaster park restroom, has resigned and pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of misdemeanor disturbing the peace, officials said Tuesday. Robert Wakeling, 51, of Lancaster, who had held the $70,000-a-year job since 1988, was sentenced Monday to three years probation and fined $1,090 by Antelope Municipal Judge Frank Jackson under terms of a plea bargain.

A sheriff's captain and a deputy probation officer who have promised to make campus safety a top priority have been elected to the Antelope Valley Union High School Board of Trustees. Tony Welch, commander of the Antelope Valley sheriff's station, was the top vote-getter in the high school board race, receiving nearly 21% of the 72,092 ballots cast, according to preliminary election results provided Wednesday by the Los Angeles County registrar-recorder/county clerk's office.

Trustees with the Castaic Union School District on Friday chose an assistant superintendent from an Antelope Valley school district as their top administrator. Alan K. Nishino, 48, was picked from a field of 25 candidates and is scheduled to begin a three-year contract with the Castaic district April 1. "I'm really looking forward to working with the district and community," said Nishino, currently with Lancaster's Eastside Union School District.

Voters have given the Antelope Valley area's 10 school districts an influx of new leaders, picking newcomers for 12 of 21 school board seats in Tuesday's election, returns showed Wednesday. Challengers defeated incumbents in four races and eight other newcomers won election to seats without incumbents . The 12 will take office next month. Turnout in the Antelope Valley area was light. Los Angeles County officials said they had counted ballots from only 11.

A coalition of Antelope Valley elementary school districts Thursday accused county officials and the area's high school district of secretly trying to promote a major restructuring of school districts in the area. County and high school district officials denied any such effort. But representatives of six of the valley's nine elementary school districts held a news conference to charge that the two groups have been collaborating to impose a new system of unified school districts.
