Ed Hodgkiss has taken his playbook outdoors, and it appears the sky is the limit for his new team. The former coach of the Avengers of the Arena Football League has guided Torrance Bishop Montgomery High to a 5-2 start, including a 33-30 victory Friday over previously unbeaten Montebello Cantwell-Sacred Heart. "It's a special win for the program," Hodgkiss said Saturday, noting that the long-suffering Knights are not believed to have logged more than four victories in a season since 1984.

It took only five minutes, said Avenger owner Casey Wasserman, to know Ed Hodgkiss was "the guy." Undoubtedly, it will take more time than that for Hodgkiss, who was announced as the Avenger coach at a news conference Friday, to build a contender from a team that has not made the playoffs and is 8-20 over two seasons in the Arena Football League.

Former USC quarterback Pat O'Hara will be named head coach of the Avengers today. O'Hara, who spent the last three Arena Football League seasons as Tampa Bay's offensive coordinator, will succeed Ed Hodgkiss, who was fired after the Avengers failed to make the playoffs with a 5-11 record. "Any time that you go through a process, you learn about your organization and your team," Avengers owner and Chief Executive Casey Wasserman said. "And everything we went through helped us make the right choice for this team.

Ed Hodgkiss, offensive coordinator for the Arena League Indiana Firebirds, was scheduled to meet with Avenger officials again Monday regarding the team's head coaching position. Casey Wasserman said no deal was imminent, but sources familiar with the negotiations said Hodgkiss was "close" to agreeing to a contract. Hodgkiss, along with interim coach Robert Lyles, is one of several candidates the Avengers have interviewed to replace Stan Brock, who was fired three games into the 2001 season.
