The Great Depression gripped the country in the summer of 1936, so for a 12-year-old boy Coney Island was a magical place. "Money was a little scarce, but I could buy a dozen worms for a dime and I would cut 'em in half and catch a dozen whiting or more," Ed Pearlman recalled. "Sell off maybe five for a quarter on the boulevard near the pier and have enough to take home and pay for my worms and maybe buy some hooks and stuff."

For the first time since the inaugural Baja 1000 in 1967, the 28th annual race will go the full length of the Baja California peninsula--1,146 miles from Tijuana to La Paz--starting next Thursday. Actually, the Ford Tecate SCORE race will be the longest ever; the 1967 race had only a ceremonial start in Tijuana and then got under way seriously in Ensenada.

Whatever the reviews, the new movie "A River Runs Through It" has to be one of the top two or three motion pictures ever about fishing. Don't get excited yet. It's a short list, topped by "The Old Man and the Sea" but ruling out "Jaws," "Orca the Killer Whale" and "Moby Dick," in which the subjects were cast as eaters, not entrees. "River," based on the late Norman Maclean's best-seller and directed and co-produced by Robert Redford, revolves around fly-fishing in Montana.
