A balky hamstring has left Landon Donovan's status for the MLS Western Conference final in Seattle uncertain and the Galaxy could be missing as many as two other regulars to injury as well. Donovan, a playmaking and scoring midfielder, missed four games to leg problems during the regular season and came out of the first leg of the conference final last Sunday with what has been described as hamstring tightness. He trained Friday for the first time in five days and was hopeful about his progress.

Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena says he doesn't pay much attention to the Major League Soccer standings, a story even his players don't fully believe. "I'm not going to call him a liar," defender Todd Dunivant said playfully. "But we all certainly keep an eye on it. It's hard not to at this stage of the season … where every game matters. " Few games this season have mattered as much as the one the Galaxy plays Sunday in Santa Clara, where it will meet the league-leading San Jose Earthquakes (Galavision, Time Warner Cable, 4 p.m.)

The Galaxy scored five second-half goals -- including two from teenager Jack McBean -- to beat the Vancouver Whitecaps, 6-0, and win Major League Soccer's West Division championship Friday at the Home Depot Center. Reserve League clubs are made up of little-used players from the parent team's first-division roster as well as up to five players from the team's development academy. Pat Noonan, Tommy Meyer, Rafael Garcia and Andrew Boyens also scored for the Galaxy. which finished the season 6-3-1.

They played in the same stadium as the Galaxy and they wore the same uniforms. But that's pretty much the extent of the similarities between Major League Soccer's defending champion and the 11 impostors who started Wednesday in the CONCACAF Champions League win over the Puerto Rico Islanders at the Home Depot Center. Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane were there, but they watched the game in street clothes. And although David Beckham put a uniform on, he also was a spectator, marking only the third time in more than a year that all three of the Galaxy's brightest stars sat out together.

Edson Buddle was on something of a sabbatical with the German bundesliga last spring so he missed the Galaxy's stumbling start, one in which Coach Bruce Arena's team won only two of its first six games. But he knows how the season ended: with four consecutive victories and a Major League Soccer title. As a result Buddle, a high-scoring striker, and the Galaxy are far from panicking after winning only once in four tries this season. "Bruce said this year we started out better for some reason –possession-wise — than last year.

Wouldn't you know it? As soon as the stumbling Galaxy figure things out, beating D.C. United, 3-1, Sunday for its first win this season, it gets the next two weeks off. Turns out that's a good thing. Because not only is the Galaxy exhausted after starting the year with four games in 12 days, but some of its players are still trying to learn each other's names. Take striker Robbie Keane and midfielder Marcelo Sarvas, for example. They combined for the Galaxy's three goals Sunday but they didn't meet for the first time until the team gathered at the airport to fly to its opening game, which also marked the first time Keane and striker Edson Buddle played together.

The Galaxy unveiled its 2011 championship banner to considerable fanfare before a sellout crowed Saturday at Home Depot Center. Given the way the team played in the game that followed, it may be a while before it gets a chance to celebrate another title. Sloppy on defense for much of the night, the Galaxy completely unraveled late in the second half, allowing Real Salt Lake to rally from a one-goal deficit to a 3-1 win in the Major League Soccer season opener for both teams. The Galaxy boasted the league's best defense last year, giving up less than a goal a game.

The Galaxy lost the last Major Soccer League match Edson Buddle played in. That was 17 months ago in the MLS playoffs at the Home Depot Center. And heading into the first match of a new season Saturday, the Galaxy hadn't lost at home since. In fact, the team has hardly lost at all, cruising to its first MLS title in six seasons last year while Buddle toiled in relative anonymity for a second-division club in Germany. Yet if Buddle could do it all over again, he would. "Yeah, I've thought about it," says Buddle, a fan favorite when he led the Galaxy in scoring in 2010.

The Major League Soccer schedule stretches into December for the first time this year, making the season more of a marathon than it's been in the past. For the defending champion Galaxy, however, it's starting off with a sprint. When the Galaxy opens its league season Saturday night at the Home Depot Center against Real Salt Lake, it will be playing the second of four games in a 12-day stretch, a test of stamina brought on by the overlapping schedules of the CONCACAF Champions League and MLS. "It is what it is," Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena said after Friday's hourlong practice.

By the time the Galaxy hoisted Major League Soccer's championship cup last November, it was recognized by many as the best team in MLS history. Then it got better. So when the defending champions open the league's new season at the Home Depot Center against Real Salt Lake on Saturday night, the Galaxy will do so knowing that anything short of a second consecutive title will be a failure. "We need to perform like we did last year. If not better," said midfielder David Beckham, whose team had the best record in the regular season (19-5-10)
