Erin Pyka, an All-American swimmer from El Toro High School, has been named the 1990-91 female CIF State scholar-athlete of the year, CIF associate commissioner Margaret Davis announced Tuesday. Pyka was selected from among 575 applicants for the $2,000 scholarship award. She has maintained a 4.67 grade-point average at El Toro and will attend Harvard University in the fall.

El Toro High School senior Luke Johansen stepped into teacher Debbie Ford's shoes last week to teach a health class on an uncomfortable subject: male reproduction. Once he got past the first 15 minutes, he was no longer nervous. "Our students, the ones I got to teach, I was surprised how mature and well mannered they were," Johansen, 17, said. Johansen was one of 16 students who swapped roles for the day with their math, science, social studies, foreign languages and English teachers.

By early next year, El Toro High School may become the first school in the Saddleback Valley Unified School District to hold fund-raising bingo games on campus. The Board of Education this week agreed to amend an administrative policy which had prohibited holding any "game of chance," such as bingo, at district schools.

A top El Toro High School cross-country runner who was injured in a car accident in August is slowly coming out of a coma, according to his coach. Tomas Mejia, 16, will be moved to a Laguna Hills convalescent hospital where he will begin more vigorous rehabilitation treatment, said Rick Hagin, the school's cross-country coach. "He's starting to come out of it," Hagin said. "His one eye is open, and he does see you. He communicates by body languages and frowns."

Charges were filed Tuesday against an El Toro High School math teacher and longtime wrestling coach alleging that he used the Internet to arrange a meeting for sex with a person he thought was a 13-year-old girl. Enoch "Jerry" Jarrett, 50, was arrested last week by the FBI's Sex Assault Felony Enforcement team, whose agents work undercover in Internet chat rooms, FBI spokeswoman Cheryl Mimura said. The FBI said the meeting was to take place at a West Los Angeles shopping mall.

Continuing its preparation for the Barcelona Olympics, the U.S. National water polo team will play host to the Alamo Cup tonight and Saturday. The United States plays Canada in the opening match at 6:30 tonight at El Toro High School. A match between Italy and the Commonwealth of Independent States will follow at 8. The tournament will move to Corona del Mar High on Saturday for the third-place and championship matches at 3:30 and 5 p.m., respectively.
