We totally disagree with the story which appeared in The Times on Feb. 3, about the alleged drug-testing cheating in the USC football program. We believe the sources, who were never named, are not valid and the story is not based on fact. The only player named in the story was a former walk-on who quit the team when he wasn't given a scholarship. In the numerous tests given to us by USC and the NCAA, we were always observed throughout the process. We didn't see any cheating, we're not aware of any cheating and we find it would be extremely difficult to cheat.

Of USC's 80 or so players suiting up for Saturday's Rose Bowl game against UCLA, only one knows what it feels like to defeat the Bruins. For senior Elic Mahone, a disappointing college football career is dwindling to a final few Saturdays. Once thought to be a tight end or defensive end of great promise, Mahone instead has been injured more often than he has been fit the past five seasons. He's the only current Trojan who played in the 45-42 victory over UCLA in 1990.

With injuries knocking sophomore tight end Yonnie Jackson and senior nose guard Gene Fruge out of Saturday's game against California at the Coliseum, USC could start as many as eight freshmen against the Golden Bears. Coach Larry Smith won't announce his starting lineup until Friday, but six freshmen started in Saturday's 13-6 victory over Arizona State. And the probable replacements for Jackson and Fruge--Brad Banta or Elic Mahone at tight end and Mike Hinz at nose guard--are freshmen.

USC lost freshman fullback Taso Papadakis for the season in its 49-7 victory over Houston on Saturday. Papadakis, whose father, John, was a 1970 and '71 USC linebacker, suffered a dislocated wrist and had surgery that night. He was playing No. 3 fullback, behind starter Deon Strother and backup Rory Brown. Defensive end Elic Mahone (shoulder) and tailback Dwight McFadden (ankle) also are sidelined for the season.

A familiar, white-haired figure appeared on the sideline at USC's afternoon practice Tuesday. It was John McKay, the Trojans' coach from 1960-75, when his teams were 127-40-8. McKay, 70 and retired, said he still follows USC. "I watch SC's games, as long as they don't interfere with my golf game," he said. Of John Robinson's return as USC's coach, McKay said: "I think it's best to have people (coaching) who have been around USC."

Rob Johnson is the latest to join the injured on USC's pass offense. The senior quarterback aggravated a sore back in the Penn State game. Johnson was suited up at practice Wednesday, but took no snaps. Instead, backups Brad Otton and Matt Koffler did all the throwing. Starting wide receivers Ed Hervey and Keyshawn Johnson, who did not play against Penn State, did not practice Wednesday. Defensive end Elic Mahone and tight end John Allred turned ankles Wednesday, and had to leave practice.

It is less than two weeks from The Big Day of Feb. 14--the first day that high school football prospects can sign national letters of intent with NCAA colleges--and the operative word is indecision . There are several noteworthy exceptions.

USC's injury update, with only Saturday morning's practice remaining of its two-week preseason camp at UC Irvine: Senior starting offensive tackle Len Gorecki, who injured his knee last week, has had arthroscopic surgery and is expected to be out of action for at least four weeks. Senior tight end Brad Banta has a sprained knee, and senior safety Mike Salmon has an ankle sprain. Both are starters and both could miss several more practices.

Before embarking on spring practice and preparations for next season, USC football Coach Larry Smith attempted to purge a forgettable 1991 season. USC was 3-8 last season, its worst since 1957 and only its second losing season since 1961, and ended the year with six consecutive defeats, a school record. Not long afterward, Smith met with Vivian Credidio, a sports psychologist employed by USC.
