As if a working woman pushing 60 doesn't have enough to worry about these days, Elizabeth Adams' nest egg is gone. Someone, it seems, swiped it from the mirrored guest bathroom of a mansion in Bel-Air. "There were diamond bracelets and necklaces, sapphires and diamonds and pearls, gifts to me when I had started out and the Arabs had just found their black gold," Adams fumes. "Eighteen watches, Piagets and Cartiers. Half a million dollars worth, in a tan Louis Vuitton bag."

The woman whose high-priced prostitution business earned her the nickname "Beverly Hills Madam" and whose role as a police informant kept her from being tried as a pimp was sentenced Monday to 18 months' probation on a lesser charge. Elizabeth Adams, 58, could have been sentenced to six years in prison had she been convicted of charges that she acted as a pimp and panderer based in her home high above the Sunset Strip. She also was accused of trying to recruit an undercover policewoman in 1988.

The woman whose lavish and lucrative prostitution network earned her the nickname "Beverly Hills madam" will get probation instead of prison, largely because of police testimony that she was a valued informant, officials said Monday. Elizabeth Adams, 58, had faced a minimum jail term of three years for charges that she used her house above the Sunset Strip to pimp and pander, and attempted to enlist an undercover policewoman into her high-priced ring of call girls.

How ironic that Pat Riley gets the NBA coach-of-the-year award right before his coaching (or lack thereof) contributed greatly to the Lakers' downfall against Phoenix. Example A: Games 1 and 3 are lost because Riley double-teams Kevin Johnson with the men who are guarding Tom Chambers and Jeff Hornacek. Solution: Double-team Johnson with the man guarding Kurt Rambis. Riley finally does this in Game 5. What took him so long?

A retired Los Angeles police detective testified Friday in a pretrial hearing for accused "Beverly Hills madam" Elizabeth Adams that his department knew and condoned her activities, and that she was a police "agent" who gathered information on several criminal cases. Glenn R. Souza, who also has worked as filmmaker Robert Evans' bodyguard, was the first witness to testify for the defense in its motion to dismiss charges of pandering, receiving stolen property and grand theft against Adams, 55.
