After more than 24 years as a Trans World Airlines flight attendant, Elizabeth Rich was fired. The charge: theft of company property. The goods: four leftover half-pint cartons of milk and a TWA toilet kit issued to a New York-to-Paris passenger who left it behind in a seat pocket. Rich is not disputing that she took the items--"TWA's garbage," she calls them--nor does she condone theft.

It has happened in Long Beach, where Charlie Nicholas noticed that the TV set in the waiting room for potential jurors sports a handwritten sign about a certain rowdy talk show. "Effective 6-25-98," it says, "Jerry Springer can no longer be viewed in jury service."

Question: Which is worse: 1) A mediocre play by Agatha Christie, or 2) A poor staging of a play by Agatha Christie? Answer: Something else--a poor staging of a mediocre play by Agatha Christie. That's the dubious achievement of Golden West College's Summer MysteryFest production of Christie's near-forgotten "Verdict," at the campus Patio Theatre. For Christie fans, alas, it may be near-compulsory viewing.

Michael Blake, the writer, likes the feeling of creativity. He likes waking up in the morning, putting words on paper, watching characters come to life in front of his eyes. "The feeling of creating people--that is the best of all," he said. Michael reads voraciously, and when it's time to read, he usually picks up anything by John Steinbeck. He likes "the elegance, the precision and compression" of Steinbeck's writing and finds "The Wayward Bus" the best example of a style he can't resist.
