Construction is expected to begin in January on a 12-story, nearly 300,000-square-foot Embassy Suites hotel in San Diego. Completion is scheduled for March, 1987. The 5.23-acre parcel, on the northwest corner of Towne Centre and La Jolla Village drives, was purchased by Embassy Suites for $7 million, according to Coldwell Banker Commercial Real Estate Services, which represented the buyer. The seller, La Jolla Community Associates Inc.

A handful of maids and janitors line up most weeks outside the gleaming Embassy Suites in Irvine to urge visitors to boycott the hotel. But the workers aren't just protesting management - they are also targeting their union brothers and sisters. One of the hotel's largest investors is the Los Angeles County Employees Retirement Assn., which manages $41 billion in pension funds for firefighters, sheriff's deputies and other union and nonunion workers. Unite Here Local 11 is seeking to unionize 65 hotel workers and says Embassy Suites is trying to fire those who support the union.

Completion of the Anaheim hotel, the company's fourth project in Orange County, will give Embassy Suites 1,033 rooms in Orange County. Here's another sign the economy is stronger: Several major hotel chains are significantly raising the number of loyalty reward points needed to book a free room. It's a simple matter of supply and demand, said Joe Brancatelli, who writes an online column on business travel. An improving economy has spurred more travel, prompting hotels to raise rates. "Demand is up so they can charge more," he said of hotels adjusting their reward points programs. Most of the chains adopting point hikes are shifting hotels to a higher tier in their respective programs.

Completion of the 12-story hotel between Interstates 5 and 805 is scheduled for the winter of 1987, according to Byron Head, western region construction manager for Dallas-based Embassy Suites Inc.

Hervey Feldman, 67, a hotel magnate who was known as the father of the Embassy Suites hotels, died of cancer Tuesday at his home in Dallas, company officials said. Feldman and his partner, Thomas Corcoran, turned $15,000 in what they called "hobby money" into one of the nation's premier hotel real estate investment trusts, FelCor Lodging.

An evergreen tree atop the Embassy Suites hotel in La Jolla framework marked the topping-out of the 12-story building. The 300,000-square-foot hotel is about one month ahead of schedule, according to John M. Wainwright, project manager for general contractor, McDevitt & Street Co. Plans call for the hotel to be completed on June 1, about two months ahead of schedule. Construction costs are estimated at $18 million. Buss, Silvers Hughes & Associates of San Diego is architect.

Central Florida senior guard Marcus Jordan , a 21-year-old son of NBA legend Michael Jordan , was arrested outside a hotel in Omaha early Sunday morning. Jordan was charged with resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and obstructing officers, according to a news release. Police responding to a call at the Embassy Suites found hotel security trying to subdue Marcus Jordan, who was having an argument with two women in the hotel driveway at 2:11 a.m. The release stated Jordan was "very animated, intoxicated and uncooperative," and it took multiple officers to control and handcuff him. Jordan was booked at the Douglas County Department of Corrections.

Two months after selling two hotels in Philadelphia, HEI Hotels & Resorts, a Norwalk, Conn.-based investor in hotel properties, has sold the 293-suite Embassy Suites Irvine-Orange County Airport for an undisclosed price. "With the comprehensive renovation completed in 2008, we have achieved our long-term ownership vision for this hotel," said Steve Mendell, HEI's president for acquisitions and development. "Combining our intimate knowledge of both the hotel and the market, however, we believe we will continue to add value to this asset as a third-party operator.

Wachovia, teetering on the brink of financial ruin as attorneys for Citigroup and Wells Fargo duked it out, would also receive taxpayer money and yet sent its top brokers on an all-expense-paid cruise to the Greek Isles. Their justification: "This is one way that we recognize our top financial advisors."

Los Angeles-based Windsor Capital Group Inc. and Olympus Real Estate Corp. of Dallas have purchased the Windsor Suites Hotel in Santa Ana, the partnership group announced Thursday. Terms of the sale were not disclosed. The 302-suite hotel will change its name on Saturday to the Embassy Suites Orange County Airport North. The deal marks the sixth California hotel property purchased by Olympus in 1996.
