HMO California said Wednesday that it has agreed to be acquired by Employers Health Insurance Co., a unit of Emphesys Financial Group Inc. of Green Bay, Wis. Terms of the purchase by Employers Health, the nation's 10th-largest group health insurance company, were not disclosed. HMO California, a privately held company based in Newport Beach, has customers in Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

Wisconsin insurance regulators have confirmed they granted two insurance companies permission to market policies that limit or deny payments to in-state clients who suffer from AIDS or AIDS-related illnesses. But the action was a mistake, Deputy Insurance Commissioner Bob Elconin said. "We've been clearly assured by both companies that the exclusions will not be exercised." The exclusions were granted to Rural Securities Inc. of Madison and Employers Health Insurance Co.

Humana Inc., one of the nation's biggest health maintenance organizations, said Thursday that it will acquire Emphesys Financial Group Inc. for $650 million in cash. Emphesys is the country's 10th-largest group health insurer. Through its De Pere-based Employers Health Insurance Co., the company provides medical and life insurance for 1.3 million people in 46 states.
