Back Order: Emporio Armani Express Restaurant always had a front door. Now, the restaurant at South Coast Plaza is getting a back door. That is, a back door as in one that enters from the parking lot, not the mall's common area. The new door will allow the restaurant to remain open after the mall closes. The restaurant, which shares space with the Emporio Armani clothing store, also has applied for a liquor license and will add a back patio and live music, spokeswoman Megan Thompson said.

Next month, when they open a new restaurant called Emporio Armani Express in South Coast Plaza, the five businessmen will have three Italian restaurants at or near the giant Costa Mesa shopping mall. Their flagship business, the stylish L'Opera restaurant, is in downtown Long Beach.

My eyes glazed over: Emporio Armani Express Restaurant, located in a Beverly Hills boutique and featuring a carpaccio of the day. A carpaccio of the day! Just sell the clothes, fella. OK, so my eyes glazed over; it's not the first time they've misled my mouth. The food served in this restrained and elegant room (actually upstairs from the boutique proper) turned out to be stunning.

Two of the hottest celebrity draws in the restaurant business, the Hard Rock Cafe and Planet Hollywood, may be coming to Orange County soon. The Hard Rock, the international restaurant chain known for its T-shirts and rock 'n' roll memorabilia, has been negotiating with Newport Center Fashion Island officials to open a restaurant in the upscale Newport Beach mall. No lease agreement has been signed so far, but mall officials say that a decision could be announced as soon as next week.
