Ah, autumn. In Orange County, people can't depend on trees to drop their leaves to hearken the end of summer. Here, fall's arrival is marked by the opening of new stores at area malls. Two of the glitzier debuts are coming this month at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa. Emporio Armani, a collection of men's and women's casual clothes by designer Giorgio Armani, opens Sunday. The 8,000-square-foot store will be the third Emporio Armani in the nation, with the other two in New York and Honolulu.

The Store: Emporio Armani in Beverly Hills The Look: A splendid stainless-steel staircase unspools inside the front doors, separating the men's and women's departments. Inside, it's the no-frills, blond-wood look. The men's and women's departments are mirror images of each other. Don't expect anything cute, like chintz slipper chairs separating the women from the men--this is Armani.

Back Order: Emporio Armani Express Restaurant always had a front door. Now, the restaurant at South Coast Plaza is getting a back door. That is, a back door as in one that enters from the parking lot, not the mall's common area. The new door will allow the restaurant to remain open after the mall closes. The restaurant, which shares space with the Emporio Armani clothing store, also has applied for a liquor license and will add a back patio and live music, spokeswoman Megan Thompson said.

If anything got through to the audience of 250 at last week's spring/summer presentation at the Emporio Armani store in South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, it was this: Get a tan. One bronzed model after another walked by in clothes from the men's and women's collections that were quintessentially Mediterranean--airy, neutral and simple. The basic palette of ecru, wheat, white and black, with only a strike of color here and there of brick red, served to deepen the models' sun-bathed skin.

As the name implies, Emporio Armani Express is a restaurant for people on the go. Now the South Coast Plaza eatery is going to offer food for people in such a hurry that they can't even sit down. The restaurant now has a "to go" menu featuring many of the pizzas, salads, sandwiches and appetizers on the regular menu. "This is fast food for the culinary aficionado," said Enzo De Muro, who operates the bistro in the Costa Mesa mall.

Now that the first Christmas rush for retailers, the gift-buying frenzy, is history, the second rush--returns and exchanges--begins today. That puts Armani Cafe in South Coast Plaza at one focal point, and there are few better local spots to enjoy a chic, if hectic, Sunday brunch. Brunch is, as we know, an American concept, without much currency in Italy. On Sundays in Italy, eating is an ongoing, all-day affair, and the notion of combining breakfast and lunch is absurd.

Gianni Versace is a warm, clever man of 49 with a broad forehead, a modest paunch and a casual gray beard. The day before his spring collection was shown to buyers, the press and celebrity friends like Liam Gallagher of Oasis and his fiancee, Patsy Kensit, he talked through a hurried lunch, offering sound bites on a number of topics. * On elegance: "Some women are elegant with just a T-shirt and a pair of jeans. Of course, if you have a nice cashmere jacket too, it helps."

Even the Orange County Performing Arts Center has surrendered to the siren call of Village Crean. The Tara-inspired spread belonging to John and Donna Crean of Santa Ana Heights will be the site of a "Picnic on the Green" for members of Britain's esteemed Royal Ballet on Aug. 11, after their final matinee performance at Segerstrom Hall. So far this year, about 30 charity bashes have been tossed at the Crean complex, with its rolling emerald lawns and "Gone With the Wind" ambience.

The crowd gathered for the Jean-Paul Gaultier fashion show in an old nightclub here was so densely packed that a shouting match among photographers sardined into a tiny pit nearly broke into a fistfight. The popular French designer's presentations are always mob scenes; he's known for putting on a good show, so conservatively dressed American retailers find themselves crushed against pierced and tattooed Gaultier groupies.

Get ready for a royal visit early next year. Listen hears that Andrew and Sarah, the Duke and Duchess of York, are coming to town. Bullocks Wilshire's new president, Terry Lundgren, says the royal couple will be honored during the store's weeklong promotion of fashion, accessories and home furnishings from the United Kingdom. They're calling the event "UK-LA," which translates to lots of parties, fashion shows and in-store appearances at all the B-W store branches.
