They rallied from a non-playoff team to the No. 2 seeding in the Western Conference, set a team record for consecutive home wins, displayed an exciting comeback nature, surprisingly emerged with dueling goalies, and locked up their two pending star free agents. Yet, the Ducks bowed out to the seventh-seeded Detroit Red Wings in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. So following Sunday's 3-2, Game 7 loss that deprived Southern California of the first Ducks-Kings playoff series, the season assessments were: "Disappointment.

The presiding judge of L.A. County's Juvenile Court and the head of a court-appointed law firm representing foster children have called on Los Angeles county supervisors to sever the county's contract with Teens Happy Homes. Starr Heimov, who leads the law firm, said the county can cut its ties with the home without having to disrupt the placement of children whose foster parents are providing good care. "If the parents meet standards," she said, "the county needs to assist them with a new certification by a new contractor.

UCLA defensive end Owamagbe Odighizuwa could sit out the 2013 season after surgery on his right hip Tuesday. UCLA Coach Jim Mora feared he had lost the sophomore defensive lineman for the season, but doctors found that the damage wasn't as extensive as previously believed. Owamagbe had a frayed rotator cuff in his hip, and Mora was unsure of the timetable for his return. Odighizuwa, who will be a junior this fall, underwent surgery on his left hip during the off-season and did not participate in spring practice.

NEW DELHI - Thousands gathered Tuesday in the rubble of the collapsed Rana Plaza garment factory complex in Bangladesh to pray for the 1,127 people who died in the world's worst apparel industry disaster. Pictures taken at the Islamic prayer ceremony on the outskirts of Dhaka, the capital, showed a rescue worker in yellow headgear affixing a red flag in the ruins. Army personnel, who have been working around the clock for almost three weeks, ended their cleanup and recovery operation early Tuesday, handing responsibility to civil authorities.

For all the anguish he caused, there were moments when Manny Ramirez was a unique, irresistible, almost childlike force. That would be the Manny who was electric at the plate, and jovial and carefree in the clubhouse. Not the drug-busted, non-talking, non-producing Manny. But when he was going good, there was no one like him, neither via his baseball prowess or special antics on and off the field. Ramirez, who turns 41 on May 30, is not willing to give up the ghost just yet. After failing to hook up with the Oakland Athletics last season, he is now playing baseball in Taiwan.

NEW DELHI, India - The Bangladesh army announced Monday it would end its search for bodies in the rubble of a garment factory complex that collapsed nearly three weeks ago in a suburb of the capital, Dhaka. Saying they believe they have found all the corpses, authorities placed the final death toll at or close to 1,127, making it the worst disaster in the history of the global apparel industry. The eight-story Rana Plaza collapsed April 24th just before 9 a.m., leading to weeks of frantic rescue efforts as anguished relatives watched and waited under the hot sun. The disaster has focused global attention on the desperate conditions for workers in Bangladesh making clothes for bargain-hungry Western consumers.

A Soyuz capsule has landed safely in the steppes of Kazakhstan, bringing to a safe end the space odyssey of Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, whose video of David Bowie's "A Space Oddity" has gone viral. The capsule containing Hadfield, along with fellow International Space Station crew members Tom Marshburn and Roman Romanenko, landed on its side, kicking up a cloud of dust, at 8:31 Tuesday morning local time. Crews were on site to extract them -- Hadfield was the last to emerge -- and take the three to a nearby medical tent.

A great beginning turned into a sorry end for the Ducks, who burned up the NHL in the early weeks of this lockout-shortened season but were too burned out Sunday to put up much of a consistent challenge to the inspired Detroit Red Wings. What should have been a memory for the ages - a Game 7, a defining moment every NHL player craves - evolved into a dispirited 3-2 loss for the second-seeded Ducks, who were a step slower and a split-second behind the seventh-seeded Red Wings most of the night.

CHICAGO - Mike Trout spared the Angels the indignity of being on the wrong end of a perfect game or no-hitter Sunday night, grounding a single to center field with one out in the top of the seventh inning after Chicago White Sox starter Chris Sale retired the first 19 batters. That was it as far as offensive highlights for the Angels, who were one-hit by Sale in a 3-0 loss in U.S. Cellular Field that ended their win streak at three and dropped them to 14-23 and 10 games behind Texas in the American League West.
