Romantic wedding traditions are back, complete with religious ceremony, reception, honeymoon--and the diamond engagement ring. "More than 75% of all brides now receive a diamond engagement ring. That's up 9% in the last two years," says Kae McCulloch, fashion consultant to the Jewelry Industry Council. McCulloch discerns a trend toward unusual and individually-designed engagement rings.

A woman whose dreams died with her fiance on TWA Flight 800 says she is fighting to get her diamond engagement ring, which was found in the ocean after the jet exploded and crashed. But an airline source familiar with Julie Stuart's repeated requests, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Stuart needs to prove that the item belonged to her fiance. "Also, this property, when and if it is identified as his, under New York law has to be returned to the next of kin," the source said.

About 50 police officers and volunteers searched a stretch of the Artesia Freeway on Friday for the engagement ring belonging to the fiancee of a slain Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy, creating a massive traffic jam but finding nothing. Police believe that the two men accused in the execution-style killing of Deputy Shayne York, 26, on Aug. 14 may have thrown the ring away hours later as they were being arrested on the freeway.

An engagement ring is an expensive, seemingly indestructible version of those red tags taped to furniture that say: Sold. Move on, prospective buyer. This one's taken. At 20 I knew I'd never wear one. I wish I'd stuck to my guns. A sorority may be an unlikely place to develop an aversion to engagement rings. In fact, I may have been the only sorority girl on the planet turned off by ritualized diamond envy. Sorority girls would gather in a circle, sing the sweetheart song and pass around a lighted taper adorned with baby's breath and roses.

The new owner of the 40-carat diamond engagement ring that once belonged to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis is . . . the wife of a catsup king. Albert Lippert, chairman emeritus of H. J. Heinz Co.'s Weight Watchers subsidiary, said Thursday that the mystery caller he relayed the winning $2.59-million bid for the night before was none other than Heinz Chairman and CEO Anthony J. F. O'Reilly, who was out of the country.

Where was John Pope's class ring on "Space"? I have never known an academy man who didn't display one of those official heavy gold symbols for the rest of his life. We've always known that some men choose to go to Annapolis only to be eligible to buy the rings. And where was Penny's miniature? Such an engagement ring is always given to the "one and only." There were many shots of the hands of both John and Penny in "Space," and they wore only wedding bands. Most unauthentic! J. Russell Thomas, Captain, USN (ret'd)
