DuPont Will Hurry Phaseout of CFC Production: The world's largest producer of chlorofluorocarbons warned its customers that it planned to accelerate its phaseout of the substance in industrialized countries, to the end of 1994. The United States and other countries had set 1995 as the goal. CFC is a chemical widely used as a refrigerant and in such industrial processes as cleaning computer chips.

In an atmosphere of palpable tension between the Earth's rich and poor, government officials and environmentalists from 178 countries opened a historic summit on the planet's future here Wednesday, with the outcome uncertain despite 2 1/2 years of preparation.
