It probably wasn't what the fans came to see, not with so many stars sitting out the exhibition between the Clippers and Lakers on Wednesday night at Staples Center. But the sellout crowd of 19,060 still was treated to a game that grew more intense as the encounter wore on, an indication that this really wasn't just another exhibition that the Clippers and Lakers played. Eric Bledsoe did his part to help the Clippers pull out a 97-91 victory in a Clippers home game. Bledsoe nearly had a triple-double with 22 points, 11 assists and nine steals.

The playoffs are the place where the knocks on Eric Bledsoe go to die. Too erratic? He made all seven shots Saturday night in the Clippers' playoff opener. Not ready to become an NBA starter? He was certainly prepared to finish, becoming the only Clipper to play the entire fourth quarter. Nothing but pure athleticism? He showed plenty of grit by grabbing six rebounds, as many as Memphis big men Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph had … combined. Bledsoe was such a blur during the Clippers' 112-91 victory over the Grizzlies in Game 1 of their Western Conference first-round series that teammate Chris Paul rendered a head-spinning analysis of his backup's contract status a day later.

Update: If Blake Griffin scores 35 points or more against the Suns, he'll be the first player in the NBA to score at least that many points in three consecutive games and the first Clippers player since World B. Free in 1979 to do so. The surprising Suns are led by former Clippers backup point guard Eric Bledsoe, who is averaging a career best in points (18.4)

INDIANAPOLIS - Ronny Turiaf answered the call Thursday night when the Clippers were in need against the Indiana Pacers. Lamar Odom had picked up his fourth foul in the fourth quarter and DeAndre Jordan was in the locker room dealing with a bloody nose during a large part of the second half. All Turiaf did was play a season-high 21 minutes and provide the Clippers with five points, three rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots. "To me, whenever your name is called, you've got to be ready," Turiaf said.

For as much as the Clippers have played inconsistent basketball over the last 1 1/2 months, for as much as they have struggled on the road and at home, they still had not lost three consecutive games all season. That still is something the Clippers can hang on to after a 96-82 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night at Staples Center. The Clippers had lost four of their last five and the first two of a six-game homestand, leading to concern about how they would break free of the doldrums.

Eric Bledsoe played on a team that lost three games last season. Blake Griffin ? All of six losses during his final collegiate season. Well, kids, we aren't in Kentucky or Oklahoma anymore. The NBA season is in its infancy, not even four weeks old, and the Clippers have lost nine games, two shy of the 11 losses suffered by rookie Al-Farouq Aminu last season at Wake Forest. (It should be noted the Clippers have played 10 games.) "It's totally different than college, a lot more games and lot less practice time," Clippers Coach Vinny Del Negro said.

It would be easy to say Clippers point guards Chris Paul and Eric Bledsoe were the showstoppers during L.A.'s 107-100 victory over the Miami Heat on Wednesday night at Staples Center. And that wouldn't be wrong, because they both came on strong in the second half, leaving Paul with a double-double with 16 points and 10 assists and Bledsoe with 12 points. But it was also about the Clippers' adding to their collection of impressive victories over some of the NBA's elite teams. They defeated the defending NBA champions with relative ease, building a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter.

The Clippers are reshaping their roster in a busy off-season. After acquiring a new coach in Doc Rivers and securing Chris Paul, the Pacific Division champions were able to land shooting guard J.J. Redick by agreeing to part with backup point guard Eric Bledsoe in a three-team, multi-player trade Tuesday. The Clippers will trade Bledsoe and small forward Caron Butler to the Phoenix Suns for small forward Jared Dudley. To complete the deal, which can't be announced until July 10, the Clippers and Suns will each send the Milwaukee Bucks a second-round draft pick.

The Clippers' bench was so good last season, there were times when you almost didn't want them to bring back in the starters. It was such a rush to watch Eric Bledsoe accelerate and Jamal Crawford discombobulate and Matt Barnes infuriate and Lamar Odom orchestrate. The collection of reserves, known as "A Tribe Called Bench," often extended leads and occasionally played entire fourth quarters. "We would come out of the game maybe up eight," forward Blake Griffin recalled Tuesday, referring to the starters, "and then we would come back into the game being up 18 or 20, something like that.
