It's basketball season, which means Eric Endsley's surfboard gathers dust in the garage. It means his baseball mitt needs to be oiled and worked into condition for the spring. It means the ammunition cartridge in his paintball gun will be empty for a while. Nobody will ever confuse Endsley's outfield play with that of Ken Griffey Jr., nor will he challenge Kelly Slater's reign on the waves. And his aim with a basketball is much better than with his paintball gun.

Offensive adjustments made at the start of the second quarter, and an all-around performance by Tony Gonzalez helped Huntington Beach defeat Marina, 63-43, in a Sunset League boys' basketball opener Wednesday at Marina High. "We couldn't hit anything in the first quarter," Huntington Beach Coach Roy Miller said. "We switched to the motion offense (to combat Marina's zone defense) and went to the single post."

Demi Zeigler made nine three-pointers and finished with 46 points to lead the University boys' basketball team to a 120-90 victory over San Pedro in a first-round game of the Irvine World News Tournament Tuesday at Woodbridge High. Zeigler, a 6-foot-3 junior, fouled out with about four minutes remaining. University (1-3) broke the tournament team scoring record of 112 set by Loara in 1990. Raymond Tutt, who entered the game averaging 37 points, scored 44 for San Pedro (3-6).

Huntington Beach High basketball Coach Roy Miller had only a moment to enjoy his team's 56-38 victory over Irvine in the semifinals of the Daily Pilot Tipoff Classic Friday night at Corona del Mar before he got the bad news. The victory earned Huntington Beach a date with top-seeded Mater Dei in tonight's championship game, and although many think the Oilers are the only team in the county that can play with Mater Dei, Miller realizes the task ahead.

Irvine held off Palos Verdes Peninsula's trapping defense in the final quarter to score a 49-43 victory in the semifinals of the Irvine World News Tournament Friday night at Irvine High School. The Vaqueros (6-1) held a 43-33 lead with 6 minutes 4 seconds left in the game, but Peninsula (6-2) began forcing turnovers and closed the gap to 46-43 on Tim Akins' three-point basket with 51 seconds remaining.

Fountain Valley Coach Gordon Billingsley had plenty to smile about after watching his team's 54-42 victory over Ocean View Wednesday at Fountain Valley High. "It's been a long time," Billingsley said. "This feels good." Paced by the three players who have led them all season, the ninth-ranked Barons clinched a share of its first league title since the 1984-85 season.

There were no rim-rattling dunks or high-flying rebounds Friday night at Marina High. No magicians with the basketball. No sharpshooters rippling the nets. But there was defense, and while that doesn't exactly set gymnasiums abuzz these days, it certainly helped Fountain Valley defeat Marina, 51-41, in a Sunset League game. Fountain Valley's victory was all about hard work and hustle. No flash, only substance.
