Point guard Eric Murdock, on the injured list since Feb. 23, is expected to be sidelined the rest of the season after recent tests revealed a bone spur in his left ankle. "In the next two or three days I'll know if I am going to have surgery," said Murdock, who has played in only 40 games after being acquired last summer in a trade with the New Jersey Nets. "I have to see exactly where the pain is coming from." To say this has been a disappointing season for Murdock would be an understatement.

Veteran point guard Eric Murdock was feeling great. He had started eight consecutive games, including Sunday's loss to Chicago, and was hoping to play a major role in the transition from former coach Chris Ford to interim Coach Jim Todd. But Murdock's fortunes changed four minutes into the first quarter against the Bulls when he had to leave a game for the third time this season because of an ankle injury.

Leadership has not been a strong point for the Clippers and Coach Chris Ford has been trying to rectify the problem by giving more responsibility to veteran point guard Eric Murdock. Ford has given Murdock instructions to make sure the Clippers are not playing one-on-one basketball. "That was my point of emphasis to him. I don't care how much they beg for it, we can still get them the ball in a set," Ford said.

After sitting out the Clippers' win over New York on Tuesday, point guard Eric Murdock played seven minutes against Seattle on Friday night. Murdock, who didn't score but had an assist, is still troubled because of tendinitis in his right knee, and Coach Chris Ford said the Clippers are a different team when the veteran is on the floor. "He brings stability to the point guard position," Ford said. "He does a great job of having a calming influence on our half-court sets."

Days before last season, the Clippers signed Sherman Douglas and hoped he would be the answer to their point guard problems. Instead, Douglas hobbled most of the season with injuries and the team decided not to bring him back. Days before the start of this season's training camp, the Clippers traded for Eric Murdock and hoped he would be their point guard answer. But Murdock has struggled with nagging injuries.

Eric Murdock walked gingerly into the training room after the Clippers' practice Tuesday, looking for some ice relief. "Just little nagging injuries are slowing me down," said Murdock, who missed the first three exhibition games because of a sprained ankle, and 32 games last season because of a left knee injury. "My Achilles' are sore a little bit and my other knee is sore a little bit but my ankle is fine. I'm just trying to get healthy. . . . I'm trying to get as much treatment as possible."

It took a balanced performance by fourth-ranked Arizona to offset the one-man show that Providence's Eric Murdock put on Sunday in Tucson. Despite a McKale Center-record 45 points by Murdock, the Wildcats pulled out a 99-87 victory to go to 8-1 for the season and extend their nation-leading home winning streak to 52 games. Providence is 7-2. Providence Coach Rick Barnes said the game made two things obvious.

The good news was after going most of the off-season scanning the market for a point guard, the Clippers acquired veteran Eric Murdock in a trade from the New Jersey Nets for forward Johnny Newman. Failure has been stalking Eric Murdock for how long now? Since February of 1990, when his heart seemed to fail him, the chilling coup de grace to a terrible season? Since junior high school, when he was too frail to play basketball and too disinterested to study? Since he was 6 months old, and his 17-year-old unwed mother was struck and killed by an automobile on a dark, rural highway? How long?
