As the sunlight glinted off Frank R. Olson's coffin for the first time in nearly 41 years, Eric Olson's last memories of his father came rushing back. He recalled seeing the dark, hardwood casket at the funeral. He remembered watching his father walk across the front yard to catch a ride to work one Monday morning. It was the last time anyone in the family saw him alive. On Nov. 28, 1953, Frank Olson plunged to the pavement from the 10th floor window of a New York hotel.

Re "L.A. sees fire hazard by freeways," April 23 Less than two years ago, a fire started beside the 118 Freeway near Topanga Boulevard and went under the freeway through a grass-filled drainage ditch. Forty-eight hours later, after two homes were lost, 25,000 acres burned, hundreds of anxious residents evacuated from their homes, firefighters risking their lives and at a cost of millions of dollars, the fire was put out. What could be a greater priority for Caltrans than to ensure that this scenario does not repeat itself this year?
