College: Orange Coast Sport: Football Position: Running Back Class: Sophomore Washington became only the fifth Orange County community college back to rush for more than 200 yards in a game when he gained 202 in 24 carries in a 42-35 victory over Southwestern in Mission Conference play Saturday. He also caught two passes for 16 yards. Washington also scored four times on runs of 14, three, one and three yards. In three games this season, he has rushed for 416 yards in 59 carries, averaging 7.

Orange Coast College running back Eric Washington scored a school-record five touchdowns and gained 161 yards in 17 carries to lead the Pirates to a 40-15 victory over Fullerton in a Mission Conference Central Division game Saturday at Fullerton District Stadium. Washington scored on runs of 67, 12, two, two and one yards. Orange Coast (6-3, 3-1 in division) led, 25-0, early in the second quarter. The loss assured Fullerton (1-8, 1-3) of its worst record in school history.

Alabama was unbeaten and had won in Alaska, but that was in the Top of the World Classic, not the Great Alaska Shootout. The victories there had come against Northeastern Illinois and Arkansas-Pine Bluff, not Kansas and Virginia. So the Crimson Tide wondered just how good it was. A clue came Thursday night in Tuscaloosa, Ala., where Eric Washington made a three-point basket with five seconds to play to give Alabama (6-0) a 70-67 victory against No. 16 Minnesota.

A little more than a year ago, Eric Washington had never seen California, let alone a community college football game. Even though he had no idea what to expect, Washington decided to move from his hometown of Boston, looking for a fresh start. Washington, a fleet sophomore running back at Orange Coast, had been a standout player as a junior at Sherborn High School, gaining more than 1,000 yards. Overweight at the beginning of his senior season, he got off to a slow start.

Center Kelvin Cato, who leads the NBA this exhibition season in shot blocking, has signed a multiyear contract extension with the Houston Rockets. Orange Coast 51, Riverside 0--Eric Washington scored four touchdowns as OCC (6-3, 1-3) stopped a three-game losing streak at Riverside. Washington rushed for 118 yards including scoring runs of one, 52, 30 and yards. He also returned a kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown. OCC led, 17-0, at the half but scored 27 points in the third quarter. OCC quarterback Donnie Smith was 13 of 16 for 176 yards. Adrain Steen also rushed for 67 yards and scored two touchdowns for OCC.

College: Orange Coast Sport: Soccer Position: Goalkeeper Class: Sophomore Funatsu, an exchange student from Japan, spent most of last season as a seldom-used field player for the Pirates, who won the State title. That figured to be his lot again this season, except OCC had trouble finding a consistent goalie. In stepped Funatsu and as a result, OCC is in the playoffs Saturday at 1 p.m. at East Los Angeles.

Mt. San Antonio defeated Orange Coast College, 13-2, in a community college football game in front of 1,800 Saturday night at Mt. SAC. The Pirates had seven turnovers, five fumbles and two interceptions. OCC quarterback Josh Gingrich threw for 147 yards, completing 13 of 21 passes with two interceptions. Tight end Brian Higgins caught seven of the passes for 62 yards and teammate Eric Washington rushed for 75 yards in 18 carries.
