Former Compton Dominguez High basketball coach Russell Otis was ordered Friday to stand trial on charges that he attempted to molest one of his players and embezzled $15,000 intended for his team. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Gary Hahn made that decision after listening to four days of testimony during a preliminary hearing in Compton. He ordered Otis, who is free on bail, to return to court July 6 for arraignment.

A former Compton Dominguez High basketball player and the school's former principal were among the witnesses Monday as testimony began in the preliminary hearing of decorated former Dons coach Russell Otis and his longtime administrative ally. Otis, 46, whose Dominguez teams won 10 Southern Section and six state titles from 1987 to 2008, faces felony charges of commercial burglary and meeting a minor for lewd purposes, plus a misdemeanor count of child molesting.

It is a large gym in which Ernie Carr works, dispensing beneath tired fluorescent lights knowledge about basketball and life to young men in red and gold uniforms. The walls are drab but hold bright championship banners. The air has success in it, and the sound of squeaking shoes. Carr, who has the lean body of an athlete and the face--adorned with a beard and glasses--of a thinker, is fiercely defensive about this place.

Dorothy Mulligan, the mother of UC Irvine basketball Coach Bill Mulligan, died Wednesday in Chicago. She was 82. She had been in failing health for several years, according to Irvine sports information director Bob Olson. Mulligan will leave for Chicago after tonight's game with fourth-ranked Nevada Las Vegas at Irvine. He will miss Saturday's game against Cal State Fullerton. Assistants Ernie Carr and Tim Murphy will coach the team against Fullerton.

UC Irvine has hired Ernie Carr and Tim Murphy as assistant basketball coaches. Carr was interim coach at Saddleback College last season and a part-time assistant coach at UCLA in 1987-88. He was basketball coach at Dominguez High School for 12 years, with a record of 195-102. Murphy is returning to Irvine after being an assistant coach at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash., last year. He was an assistant at Irvine for three years before leaving.

Junior forward Don Brotz of Wilson High School was named boys South Coast Player of the Year at a Times' awards brunch last Saturday. Brotz was the Most Valuable Player of the Moore League and averaged 23 points a game in league competition. The girl Player of the Year in the South Coast was Mandy Hannah, a junior guard from Compton who averaged 22 points a game and was Moore League MVP.
