Labor organizers have scored what is believed to be their first major success in the "dot-com" world as customer service employees at a San Francisco start-up decided to vote on seeking union representation. Erin Tyson Poh, a representative of The Newspaper Guild-Communications Workers of America, said Tuesday that a petition to certify union representation for about 36 employees at Etown.com and its sister site, ShopAudioVideo.com, had been filed with the National Labor Relations Board.

Workers at Webvan Group Inc. could be among the first dot-commers to push for unionization, but union activists say company rules are hurting their efforts. The United Food and Commercial Workers Locals 120 and 870 and Teamsters Local 70 have filed unfair labor practice charges against the Foster City-based online grocer, saying Webvan's policies restrict organizing at its Oakland warehouse.
