Once an Oscar winner, always an Oscar winner, and Eva Marie Saint, who won a supporting actress award for her feature film debut in 1954's "On the Waterfront," still breathes the rarefied air of a Hollywood icon despite appearing in only about 20 feature films. Of course, graduating from Oscar winner to Hitchcock blond five years later with her memorable role in "North by Northwest" didn't hurt. These days, Saint is still trolling for good roles. She and her director-husband, Jeff Hayden, perform A.R. Gurney's "Love Letters" around the country.

Eva Marie Saint says she has no plans to portray a Willa Cather character soon, but that touring the countryside so lovingly portrayed by the author "whets your appetite to read everything she wrote." Saint and her husband, director Jeffrey Hayden, climbed aboard a school bus Saturday as part of a caravan that rumbled up and down muddy country roads to retrace scenes from "O Pioneers!" and other Cather works.

Eva Marie Saint likes to read obituaries. But it's not due to any morbid curiosity on her part. "People are living so much longer," says the actress, who is a vibrant 80. "When you see people 106, 92, 96, 89 ...there are very few in their 50s or 60s. It's great." And she plans to keep acting as long as she can. "At my annual checkup -- I think my doctor is in his 60s -- he said, 'Eva Marie, when are you going to retire?' I said, 'Why should I? This is what I do.

"I was born on the Fourth of July," says past Oscar winner Eva Marie Saint. "I'm independent." Indeed. In a long and distinguished career marked by quality rather than quantity, Saint, now a grandmother who remains glamorous at 70, has chosen her spots carefully. One of those spots is on tap Wednesday when Saint stars with Jason Robards, Neil Patrick Harris and Elina Lowensohn in a TV-movie adaptation of Willa Cather's "My Antonia" on cable's USA Network.

Who can forget those images -- Cary Grant on a deserted highway being chased by a crop dusting plane? Grant and Eva Marie Saint scampering over the president's noses on Mt. Rushmore as they are pursued by a group of nefarious spies? Then there's the pulsating score by Bernard Herrmann, one of the great screen composer's most evocative works. In fact, Alfred Hitchcock's romantic thriller "North by Northwest" is so viscerally entertaining, it's hard to believe the classic is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

"We tell our stories and I sit there fascinated by what we're saying.

A mother's lingering illness and death, a family in conflict, a father's redemption, and a blazing Yule log: keep a hankie handy and a tight grip on those tender heartstrings, because the CBS Sunday Movie, "Papa's Angels: A Christmas Story," starring Cynthia Nixon, Scott Bakula and Eva Marie Saint, is a weepy sea of seasonal sentiment. Nixon's luminous fragility as a consumptive Appalachian mom in the 1930s--light years away from her quirky "Sex and the City" persona--triumphs over bathos.

Despite its rather saccharine title, the CBS holiday drama "Papa's Angels" is anything but two hours of Christmas sugar and schmaltz. "I felt it wasn't a sentimental Christmas piece," says Eva Marie Saint, who stars in the family drama with Scott Bakula and Cynthia Nixon. "The characters were honed in a way that they were strong. The relationships weren't the most beautiful in the world, but where is the perfect family? There isn't one.
