Ah, but many people do believe; through TV programs and retail outlets, $2.4 billion worth of home excercise equipment was sold in 1996 alone.

The joint military excercise Team Spirit '89 involving 200,000 U.S. and South Korean troops ended Thursday as scheduled, the U.S. military command said. The exercise, held every year since 1976, was staged to test and improve the capability of South Korean and U.S. forces. The ground forces included about 140,000 South Korean troops and 30,000 U.S. soldiers.

The Japanese navy will send its largest contingent so far to a joint naval exercise with ships from the United States, Australia and Canada to be held in June near Hawaii, a Defense Agency spokesman said Thursday. The flotilla of eight destroyers, one submarine, one supply ship and eight P-3C anti-submarine patrol planes from the Maritime Self-Defense Force will participate in the Rim of the Pacific Excercise (RIMPAC), held every two years, he said.

Tanya Service of UCLA won two events, including a record-setting performance in the all-around, and tied for first in two others Saturday night to dominate the UCLA/Times Women's Invitational gymnastics meet before a crowd of 6,522 at Pauley Pavilion. Service, a sophomore from St. Charles, Mo., scored 38.60 points in the all-around to set UCLA and Pauley Pavilion records. She also won the balance beam and tied for first in the floor exercise and the vault.
