If your children adore being photographed, behave in an exemplary manner when in photography studios and have furnished you with prize-winning results, I applaud you. If, however, the proofs of your children's most recent journey to the photographer moved some friends and relatives to tears (from laughter), consider your family not unique. The proofs of our most recent attempt at a family portrait detail an afternoon when only two out of our four children responded positively to the idea.

On the wall just to the right of the entrance to the Mark Brandes photo studio in Westlake Village hangs a Norman Rockwell-like shot of a family doing some wallpapering. It shows two adults, four children and one dog gathered around a ladder. "It's my sister-in-law and her family," said Brandes. "They borrowed the dog from a friend." Brandes thought that the photo needed a dog, so he found a dog. Brandes has been known to go to great lengths to shoot a family portrait for non-relatives too.

With her latest novel, Ursula Hegi affirms the storytelling gifts so famously on display in her bestselling, Oprah-chosen 1997 novel, "Stones From the River." Although Hegi isn't the kind of writer whose fiction offers one dazzling sentence after another, but in "Sacred Time," she proves that a gripping, well-structured tale can go a long way.

Two presidential campaigns and 40 years of marriage and child-rearing behind her, Ann Romney finds herself in a surprising place: atop the bestseller lists with her own agenda in first position. Romney's new cookbook, "The Romney Family Table," started as an effort to stitch together family recipes. But at a time when her husband Mitt's loss in the 2012 campaign was still raw, she began writing and "it just flowed out. " Critics have mocked the book as a study in domestic perfection served on Oscar de la Renta tableware, but Romney said she wanted to show that their life "wasn't always perfect" and that raising five boys could be more than a little frustrating.

Throughout the Duchess of Cambridge's much-publicized pregnancy, her chic maternity wear was the subject of worldwide attention. Even after the birth of her son, George Alexander Louis, on July 22, the former Kate Middleton continued to wear maternity clothing that was both elegant and stylish. Her brand of choice, Seraphine , has been scrambling to restock the duchess' personal picks, which immediately sold out when she was photographed wearing them. Cecile Reinaud, head designer and owner of Seraphine, has a background in marketing and business, but her knack for fashion led her to make maternity clothing for her friends when they were pregnant.

SACRAMENTO — High school students waiting to have senior portraits taken once filled Richard Givens' photography studio in Rancho Cordova, Calif. Now that studio holds all his worldly possessions. The career school photographer rented out his spacious home a couple of years ago and moved into his studio to make ends meet. The small, independent local school photographer — and others like him — are being squeezed out by increased competition from big national companies, an economy that has left families with little discretionary income and a decrease in interest from teens who would rather use cellphones to take pictures and immediately post them online.

The photograph that changed Charles Wong's life went on display Friday at the Chinese American Museum in Los Angeles. It is a small black-and-white portrait of a somber woman, a little boy in a new suit and a handsome youth on the cusp of manhood. Wong found the family portrait — his family portrait — tucked in a suitcase, hidden in a closet, on the day his father, Gun Chown Wong, was buried. The woman in the photo was his mother, Jook Sue. The boy was Wong himself, 6 and scared.

The pop singer known as Pink has worked hard over the last decade to cultivate a reputation as a risk taker and a rule breaker, making wildly eclectic records that gleefully disregard the strictures of genre (flamenco-flecked electro-ska, anyone?) and pointing fun at fellow celebrities she figures could use the reality check. Friday night at Staples Center, where she brought her yearlong world tour in support of 2008's "Funhouse," Pink's taste for danger took new shape. Several songs into the two-hour show, she paused the proceedings for a special announcement, telling the capacity crowd that she'd separated her shoulder four days earlier and that the injury was causing her a considerable amount of pain.

Family portraits are always a wonderful gift, but are usually the result of careful advance planning. With new computer tech nologies, however, a family or a child's portrait can be a last-minute gift--and one that will be treasured for generations.
