I may not be a fashionista, but I wear clothes as often as the next person — I'm wearing some right now as a matter of fact. And stung into curiosity by that withering monologue about the cerulean blue sweater in "The Devil Wears Prada," I am interested in how certain styles wind up dominating major commercial outlets like Macy's, H&M and Saks Fifth Avenue. What I am not interested in is another reality program in which a carefully selected group of poignantly back-storied and teary-eyed "up 'n comers" attempt to leapfrog the traditional rigors of their craft to win a competition guaranteeing them a contract.

Fashion ought to be a no-brainer for television: It's fun to look at, appeals to a spending-happy demographic and involves outsized personalities who tend to believe it's their professional duty to create drama. Yet the history of reality TV is littered with fashion-based shows that never caught on or flamed out after one season. When NBC's "Fashion Star" launches Tuesday, it will be going where many shows have gone — and stumbled — before. The most notable exception is "Project Runway," the design show at the forefront of the niche since 2004.

In its new reality TV competition "Fashion Star," NBC is partnering with major retailers to bring winning outfits from its design competitions to stores immediately. Patterned after the successful "Project Runway" hosted by Heidi Klum, the show pits 14 unknown designers against one another in weekly challenges to produce clothes that will be judged by a panel of fashion industry insiders. But instead of magazine editors or models, Fashion Star's judges are buyers from Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue and H&M. Each week, these fashion folk will make "on-the-spot" decisions to buy and carry pieces from among the outfits they are judging.

For the last few years we've drooled over what Lea Michele, Dianna Agron and the other ladies of "Glee" wear on red carpets, where they really show off their fashion star power. The show's new season started Thursday and it looks like we have a least one more fashionista coming on the scene: Becca Tobin, who plays new Cheerio Kitty. In photos from press events leading up to Wednesday's premiere she's shown she can do edgy casual, above, and red carpet polish just as well as her castmates.

What a train wreck of desperation the MTV Video Music Awards were Sunday night, right? I'm not going to continue to pile on Miley Cyrus. The girl is 20, lest we forget, and if we're not careful, she's going to end up like Lindsay Lohan. But her look--on the red carpet and onstage--just reinforced that the whole show was about bumping and grinding and butt jokes and bare midriffs and above all, trying too hard. Taylor Swift, poured into that navy blue Herve Leger column dress, had an unpleasant air of being above it all. So did her pal Selena Gomez, who looked like Swift's mean girl partner-in-crime, dressed in a navy blue Versace column gown.

Ashlee Simpson is modeling for older sis Jessica Simpson's fall fashion ad campaign.  Sporting blond locks, Ashlee Simpson, 28, reminds us of a youthful ( ahem , thinner), pre-baby version of Jessica, 33, in the latest video. Watch it above. Jessica, the former pop star, has found quite a bit of success in fashion with her department store-ready brand, even appearing as a mentor in NBC's recently canceled "Fashion Star. " PHOTOS: 50 most beautiful female celebrities Ashlee is seen fluttering about in the playful video, posing, sitting on cars, walking through fields and getting all dolled up. The bohemian rancher rocks out in printed dresses, cozy sweaters and silky PJs.
