All eyes were on the fluorescent green shoes of Landon Donovan, and the Galaxy star made the most of his initial start at Home Depot Center this season, scoring the second goal and assisting on the first in Saturday night's 2-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City. Even before the opening kickoff the near-capacity crowd of 25,908 broke into a chant and Donovan, the third-highest scorer in Major League Soccer history, gave the fans plenty to cheer after seeming a step slow against FC Dallas one week earlier in his first MLS start.

David Beckham, sporting a stocking cap and scratching his playoff beard, did not consider the question for long. Since the Galaxy had the best record in Major League Soccer in 2010, shouldn't it be the league champion without all the fuss and bother of playoff games? "Yeah, it should," Beckham replied, "but things are done obviously a little bit different" in the U.S. "It's exciting for the fans. It's exciting for the players. It's something that obviously I've never done before with other teams in other leagues, but I enjoy it. These are the games you're meant to enjoy.

Brek Shea's goal in the 71st minute helped FC Dallas extend its unbeaten streak to 11 games on Saturday at Pizza Hut Park as the Hoops downed Chivas USA, 1-0. Shea scored his fifth goal of the season from a Jair Benitez cross as he sent a looping header over the head of Chivas goalkeeper Zach Thornton and inside the far post, while Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman made the result stand up with a pair of key saves. Chivas threatened twice in the opening half but Paulo Nagamura's shot from the top of the box sailed wide, while a right-footed effort from Dario Delgado was parried by Hartman.

Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Steward Ceus made the MLS highlights Saturday night for all the wrong reasons. Ceus and the Rapids were on the road in a season-opening game against FC Dallas when only 10 minutes into the game he made a decision to come off the goal line to track down a deep pass toward Colorado's 18-yard box. Now, we've all seen players -- from baseball to basketball -- whiff on catching a grounder or collecting a pass....

Two UCLA players were among the Top 20 picks in Major League Soccer's two-round SuperDraft on Thursday: Bruin midfielder Fernando Monge is going to the Montreal Impact with the second-to-last pick of the first round, while midfielder Ryan Hollingshead went to FC Dallas with the first pick of the second round. Cal State Bakersfield defender Kory Kindle was the 25th player taken overall, going to the Colorado Rapids. Monge, an all-conference selection from Seattle, was second on the team in minutes played this season, starting all 19 of UCLA's games, scoring five times and adding an assist.

Remember the Galaxy team that ran roughshod over the rest of Major League Soccer on its way to an MLS Cup title last season? Well, it's back. And after Sunday's methodical 2-0 win over FC Dallas in front of a sun-drenched Home Depot Center crowd of 21,933, an argument could be made that the team is as good as ever. "I've heard that from a lot of people. Which is good to hear," said defender Todd Dunivant, who scored the second goal Sunday. "Obviously, you don't want to be living in the past.
