About 400 Filipino-Americans gathered Saturday in Oxnard to celebrate Philippine Independence Day by holding a 40-car motorcade parade and cultural activities. It was the first time Filipinos in Ventura County united as a group to celebrate their country's holiday, said Buddy Valencerina, chairman of the event. The eight-hour celebration, centered in College Estates Park in south Oxnard, featured a one-hour motorcade ride through Oxnard, Filipino foods, folk dances and other entertainment.

With a Philippine flag hanging by his side, Sonny Filoteo clutched his wife Soledad's hand and began singing the first lines of the Star-Spangled Banner during opening ceremonies of the 12th annual Fiesta Filipinas. Like many of the more than 2,000 people who came to Plaza Park in Oxnard for the event commemorating the Philippines' independence from Spain in 1898, Filoteo was a study in contradictions.
